πJolene's Epic Babyhorse Day!π
Saturday was absolutely inhospitable. The idea of riding wtc an hour each way to a horse show-with a HHI hovering around 180 (Horse Heat Index)- sounded unnecessarily dangerous... so I contacted the show to scratch and started to make plans for Jolene to have an Epic Babyhorse Day on Sunday.
I got in touch with Sonia of Heart-Horse Stables and made plans to come over for a ride. Much like Dancing Horses where the show was, Sonia has a local boarding farm with lots of horses and amenities like trails, obstacle courses, an arena, and more. She told me to come on over on Sunday morning and she would take a horse out with me!
Jolene's Epic Baby Day started with a full on grooming session (maybe a little over the top) with hoof oil and a tail brush just like if she was going to a schooling show. Of course she, like any good Saddlebred, loved this. Then she got to patiently watch me shine her tack and get suited up for the day.
We opened the gate, headed out the farm, and started our adventure. On our way to/from Heart-Horse Jolene got to:
π Practice opening and closing gates
π Walk, trot, and canter through a different neighborhood
π See and be passed by new cars and trucks
π Enter new water puddles
π See horses in paddocks along the road
π See my cows from a new perspective
π Ride 7 miles round-trip
That in-and-of itsself was a big fun day for Jolene, but we had just gotten started. When we got to Heart-Horse the fun just kept coming. Sonia tacked up one of her Rocky Mountain geldings and we set off together. Jolene got to:
π Ride with a strange horse
π Practice, leading, following, and riding abreast
π See a new arena and trails
π Encounter a foal
π Explore a different farm
π Check out some equine obstacles
π Go through water as a team.
I was so, so proud of Jolene on her special baby day. She handled everything with courage and curiosity. I made sure to stay out of her way and let her learn as much as she wanted to about everything and she kept blowing me away. I think she had a great time, increased her confidence and experience banks, and is continuing to flourish into an elegant, educated filly.
I hope you can watch the video to see her in action and come along on the ride. In there I also added a little bit about my thoughts on summer riding, young ASBs compared to other breeds as youngsters, and one of my biggest tips for getting a new horse used to the trails.
