Happy Parent Appreciation Week! We appreciate all the parents at SDA for helping foster the art of dance in their family. At SDA we call the adults in our dancer's lives their 'grownup', because a 'parent' can come in many forms - moms, dads, step-parents, grandparents, foster parents, aunts, uncles, guardians, and nannies. This month our focus is on connecting with others. And guess what? Social connection is good for more than you think—it can decrease anxiety, boost self-esteem and empathy, and even improve your immune system.

So what are some tips to make new connections or improve the ones we already have? Put down your phone and pay attention when in conversation. Find common interests to talk about (and in dance class, you’re already on your way). Offer up a little bit of information about yourself and then ask the other person about themselves. Show you care—being empathetic and kind goes a long way towards creating lasting connections.

As with many early holidays, May Day was rooted in agriculture. Springtime festivities filled with song and dance celebrated the sown fields starting to sprout. Cattle were driven to pasture, special bonfires were lit, and doors of houses as well as livestock were decorated with yellow May flowers. 🌼🌻💛💜

Today we are celebrating how much our dancers have sprouted since the beginning of the Dance Season. Each of our dancers have come so far since September! We’re looking forward to the recital next month to share the culmination of all the hard work and growth we’ve seen.

Today is EARTH DAY and we’re feeling extra grateful for this green and blue planet!

What’s one small action you could take to honor the earth today? How about bringing a reusable water bottle to dance class?

Did you know that Americans purchase an average of about 13 plastic water bottles per month? That means by switching to a reusable water bottle, you could save an average of 156 plastic bottles each year! What a small but mighty change! 💜💚💙
