Basketball was invented in December 1891 by Dr. James Naismith at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith nailed two peach baskets to the gymnasium balcony and utilized his foundational philosophy of "fellowship" to mold the sport. Naismith, a physical educator, medical doctor, and devout Christian, was heavily influenced by the late 19th-century "Muscular Christianity" movement. He viewed sports not just as physical outlets, but as tools to build character, develop teamwork, and teach values like fairness and courage.

We often go through life identifying ourselves through sports or jobs not receiving the sense of fulfillment. Giving your life to Christ and identifying as a child of God changes all of that. It is great seeing athletes today using their platforms to share this!

2 Corinthians 5:17 – "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"

When viewing sports through the lens of faith, the ultimate expectation shifts from constantly chasing wins to focusing on character, perseverance and stewardship. Rather than expecting divine intervention for a scoreboard of peace, shifting an athlete's identity from their performance to honoring God.

Looking forward to hosting our first Spikefest in July at Camp Excel. We'll have high school varsity and JV teams for 2 days of competitive volleyball with some college coaches present to watch the showcase!
