Here's my top 10 common golf myths debunked. 1) Golf is an easy sport. While it may appear to be effortless to hit a stationary ball with a club, the reality is quite different. Golf is a challenging and complex sport that requires a combination of skill, strategy and mental focus. 2) Longer drives equals better scores. While hitting long drives is certainly impressive, distance alone does not guarantee a low score. In fact, accuracy and control are more important factors in achieving a good score in golf. 3) Expensive golf clubs guarantee improvement. While high quality clubs can certainly enhance performance, they are not a short cut to improvement. 4) The golf swing should be a perfect arc. In reality there are different swing styles and variations among professional golfers. Each player has their own unique swing that suits their body type, flexibility, and playing style. 5) Golf is a gentleman's game. While golf has a long history and tradition of being played by men, it has evolved into a more inclusive and diverse sport. 6) The ball soars straight when hit perfectly. Factors such as wind, lie of the ball, and swing path can all influence the flight of the ball. 7) Golf is a slow and boring sport. While it may seem that way to those who haven't experienced the thrill of playing or watching golf, there is a unique excitement and adrenaline rush that comes with the game. 8) Golf is only for older people. Golf is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from young children to seniors. It offers a unique blend of physical activity, mental stimulation, and social interaction that appeals to a wide range of age groups. 9) Scoring low in golf requires exceptional talent. While natural talent certainly helps, consistent practice and dedication play a much larger role in achieving low scores. 10) Conclusion – By understanding the realities of golf and debunking the myths, we can encourage more individuals to explore and enjoy this wonderful sport!!

You'll notice a banner of 2026 SGC sponsors on the outside west wall of the pro shop. The banner lists all the business and member sponsors who have financially contributed to the golf committee. This enables the golf committee to plan and execute the many events, tournaments, and leagues throughout the golf season. Thank you again to all of our SGC sponsors!!

Do you know where to find out the Shenandoah Golf Course men's city golf champions for the past 86 years? In the pro shop along the south wall, there is a trophy display case listing the names from 1939 (Dr. Jay Rotton) to 2025 (Jay Soderberg). The large trophy inside the case is named in memory of one of the most popular past SGC members and five time champion, LeRoy “Spike” Spargur. Thanks go out to Frank Hammons for designing and building the trophy display case!

There will be three Youth Golf Camps held during the month of June. Dates are all on Fridays (12th, 19th, and 26th) from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Call the pro shop at (712) 581-9057 to sign up. Lessons include full swing, putting, chipping, and golf course etiquette. Register now – it's $30 per child.

A few reminders to everyone as we head into the busiest part of the golf season. Please check in at the pro shop before each round. All golfers should be starting on hole #1 unless given permission from the pro shop to start on hole #10. You need to be 16 and present a valid driver's license to rent a golf cart. Youth golfers under the age of 16 using a personal cart need to have permission from either the parks and rec director or the golf course superintendent in order to do so. Pair up in golf carts to reduce wear and tear on the course. And PLEASE repair all of your ball marks on the greens! If you're planning on playing golf at the SGC, you will need to call the pro shop to get an available tee time.

This week's golf slang dictionary term is “Heliputter.” And the definition is “Low Flying Type Of Aircraft Sometimes Seen Hovering Above The Green After A Short Tempered Player Misses An Easy Putt.”

This week's golf quote from famous people is compliments of American writer, humorist and essayist Mark Twain. “It's good sportsmanship to not pick up lost golf balls while they are still rolling.”

This week's “In Years Gone By” notable event is from fourteen years ago on May 19, 2012. Bob Vavra had a hole-in-one on the par three 8th hole.

This week's attempt at golf humor – Not all who wander are lost; some are looking for golf balls.

The answer to last week's trivia question – Who was the initial 1984 Shenandoah Masters handicap champion? The correct answer is Bill Dixon. This week's trivia question – What former ALCC course superintendent's name is on the shelter by the sixth tee box? The answer to this week's trivia question will be in the next FTTG column.
