‼️ There are still open spots for the Fourth Annual Governor’s Mentored Deer Hunt scheduled for Oct. 9-11.‼️

The mentored hunts will take place in several counties during Missouri’s early fi****ms antlerless deer season. Selected participants will spend the weekend with an assigned mentor who will instruct hunters on gun safety, fi***rm handling, shot placement and how to harvest a deer.

Last Saturday, NDA President & CEO Nick Pinizzotto joined Michigan Branch volunteers for their annual Deer Rendezvous, an all-day gathering of NDA volunteers and Deer Cooperative leaders at Jay’s Sporting Goods in Clare, Michigan. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is accepting applications for the Hunter Recruitment, Retention and Reactivation (R3) grant program.

The deadline to submit grant applications is Sept. 15.

The Hunter R3 grant supports projects that promote awareness, understanding and participation in safe, ethical hunting and hunting-related outdoor skills. These skills offer individuals a unique connection with nature and wildlife and foster confidence and comfort in wild places.

Past grant recipient projects include private land access programs for hunters, archery range upgrades for urban after-school clubs, support for hunting-related expos focusing on recruiting new or underserved audiences, learn to hunt and learn to shoot programs, high school clay target teams, 4-H shooting sports programs and more.

A total of $75,000 in grant funding is available. Individual grant awards are normally limited to $25,000. Cost-sharing funds can be awarded to individuals or community-based organizations, Wisconsin tribes, universities and schools.

The grant is a sub-award of federal Pittman-Robertson Act funds and is administered as a reimbursement program. Applicants should plan to start projects approximately one year from the application deadline.

Volunteers are essential to R3 efforts. Providing them with clear roles, useful training, adequate support and appreciation strengthens both the volunteer experience and the participant experience. Investing in volunteers is an investment in R3.

You always hear people talk about the “thrill of the hunt,” but what if you were never given the opportunity to experience that?

Maybe no friends or family ever shared the experience, or you lived in an area that didn’t really accommodate hunting, or maybe you just never really thought it was for you… until now.

Whatever the reason, the Game Commission, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, is offering Pennsylvanians the opportunity to experience that thrill for the first time through our mentored hunting programs.

The mentored hunting programs are designed to give new hunters, ages 12 and up, with little to no hunting experience, the opportunity to participate in managed deer hunts while accompanied by an experienced hunter.

New hunters will be provided with all necessary equipment and matched with a mentor for the hunts. Each hunt requires a mandatory orientation day to become familiar with the process. Minors must have a parent or guardian present for all orientation and hunt days.

Hunts are available at four locations this fall including John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge and Benjamin Rush State Park, both in Philadelphia, Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Stroudsburg, and Marsh Creek State Park in Downingtown.
