This image illustrates the fundamentals of trigger control, specifically identifying the correct finger placement for firing a handgun.
Proper Trigger Finger Placement
The goal of trigger control is to apply smooth, even pressure straight back throughout the firing process.

Correct Placement: Center the first pad of your index finger on the trigger and pull straight back. This ensures the force is applied directly to the rear, preventing the gun from moving off-target.
Incorrect (Too Little Finger): Using only the very tip of your finger can cause the gun to push shots to the left (for a right-handed shooter).
Incorrect (Too Much Finger): Placing the trigger in the "crease" or second pad of your finger can cause shots to pull to the right (for a right-handed shooter).
Troubleshooting Common Mistakes
If your shot groups are inconsistent, it often stems from how you manipulate the trigger:

Horizontal Drift: If your groups are tight but consistently off to the left or right, you are likely using too much or not enough finger.
Flinching: Anticipating recoil, noise, or flash can cause your hands to dip forward and down as you tense up.
Correction Tip: A common solution for trigger mistakes is the "Ball and Dummy" technique, where empty cartridge cases or snap caps are mixed randomly into your magazine to reveal flinching or improper pulls.

Note: Some instructors suggest using the second pad only for fi****ms with particularly heavy trigger pulls, but the first pad is generally considered standard for precision.
