Few players in the history of the game have a resume quite like Ted Williams. The last Major Leaguer to hit .400, a two-time Triple Crown winner, six-time batting champion, and the owner of a remarkable .482 career on-base percentage — still the highest in MLB history.

And his story goes well beyond the numbers. Williams twice stepped away from baseball to serve his country as a Marine Corps aviator, losing nearly five full seasons during the prime of his career.

On July 3, 1967, Roberto Clemente appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated for the first time — featured among the greatest hitters the National League had ever seen.

This rare newsstand copy, graded CGC 7.0, captures Clemente right in the middle of his remarkable career. He entered 1967 as the reigning National League MVP and was coming off a season in which he hit .317 with 29 home runs and 119 RBI.

More than half a century later, Clemente remains one of the most admired and important figures in baseball history — a 3,000-hit club member, 12-time Gold Glove winner, four-time batting champion, two-time World Series champion, and Hall of Famer.

THREE PIECES. ONE BASEBALL LEGEND. WARREN SPAHN.

Few pitchers in baseball history can match Warren Spahn’s combination of longevity, toughness and dominance.

Spahn finished his remarkable career with 363 wins — still the most ever by a left-handed pitcher. And he wasn’t an automatic out at the plate either, hitting an impressive 35 career home runs.

Featured here are three pieces celebrating the Hall of Fame left-hander:

And perhaps the most impressive part of Spahn’s story happened before all those victories. He lost three prime baseball seasons while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning a Purple Heart and Bronze Star before returning home and building one of the greatest pitching careers in baseball history.

Some pieces of sports history are rare. Others are nearly impossible to replace.

This July 22, 1957 Sports Illustrated features Yankees great Hank Bauer — and this particular newsstand copy carries Bauer’s autograph.

Bauer was right in the heart of one of baseball’s greatest dynasties, winning seven World Series championships with the Yankees and playing alongside names like DiMaggio, Mantle and Yogi Berra.

Before he was “Mr. Tiger,” Al Kaline was an 18-year-old kid making the jump straight from high school to the Major Leagues.

No minor leagues. No long road through the farm system. Just Baltimore’s Southern High School to the Detroit Tigers in 1953.

What followed was one of the greatest careers in franchise history: 3,007 hits, 399 home runs, 10 Gold Gloves, 18 All-Star selections, a 1968 World Series championship, and a place in Cooperstown.

Featured here is the May 11, 1964 Sports Illustrated Al Kaline cover — a rare newsstand copy graded CGC 8.5, the highest grade awarded by CGC.

This August 1948 issue of Sport magazine features Musial on the cover during one of the greatest seasons of his Hall of Fame career.

1948 Musial:
Won the National League MVP
Hit .376
Led the NL with 230 hits
Hit 39 home runs
Drove in 131 runs
Finished just one home run shy of the Triple Crown.

Stan Musial personally signed the cover.
The magazine has been authenticated and graded CGC 5.5, with the autograph authenticated by JSA.
