I turned 40 this summer and I was handed a list of injuries to follow. It made me look long and hard at my training process. Being a former college athlete who can typically push to max threshold during any given workout I asked myself, what exactly went wrong? The body doesn’t just stop making progress at 40 does it? The answer is: NO WAY!!! But our process, (yes ladies approaching 40 or beyond I’m talking to you) might need to be tweaked. Building in more recovery time might be the answer, it certainly was for me.
Recovery doesn’t need to be more days off. It might look like adding in light restorative yoga moves and more foam rolling, going to bed earlier and adding more sleep, or building in time for corrective exercises which focus on the weaker areas of your body (for example mine are glutes and hamstrings).
Our body is and should always be a work in progress and we need to embrace the process of this change and grow with it.
