This one's earned through consistent mat time — showing up, putting in the work, week after week. But what really sets Joey apart is what he does for everyone else: always first to help a training partner work through a tricky position, always patient with the newer students.

Seymour BJJ showed up in Asheville last Saturday at the Newbreed Jiu-Jitsu Tournament — and our kids delivered. 🏆

8 competitors. 6 gold. 4 silver. 1 bronze.

Here's how it went down:

Ronan and Ryder both went double gold, combining for 10 matches between them and winning every single one. 🥇🥇

Layla was an absolute force — 6 wins out of 8 matches, double gold and a silver to show for it. 🥇🥇🥈

Harper and Jaxon — a brother and sister duo — both stepped up in a big way. Harper competed for only the second time, Jaxon for the very first time. They both got wins on the day and walked away with experience that money can't buy.

Travis is one of our most active competitors and he showed up again in Asheville — taking silver in both Gi and No-Gi. Just in like in the dojo, he gave it his all in every single match. That kind of heart and consistency is what this sport is built on. 🥈🥈

Raelynn fought through some tough matches against stiff competition. She didn't end up placing but she fought hard and that's what matters most. The growth from days like that is real. 💪

And Sam — our one adult on the trip — competed for the first time ever, taking silver in Gi and bronze in No-Gi. First tournament jitters and he still made the podium. 🥈🥉

This is what Seymour BJJ is about. Not just winning — though winning is great — but showing up, competing, and growing through the process.

I compete for two reasons: the challenge and the example.

The challenge keeps me growing. There's no substitute for standing across from someone who wants to beat you. It exposes gaps, tests your mental game, and forces you to evolve in ways that drilling just can't replicate.

The example matters just as much. I ask my students to step outside their comfort zone every time I invite them to compete. The least I can do be willing to do the same thing myself.

Leadership isn't a speech. It's showing up and doing the things you're asking others to do.

That's the standard at Seymour BJJ — for me and for every student who walks through our doors.

Life doesn't slow down for anyone — work, family, responsibilities — and yet these two kept showing up on the mat anyway. 💪 That kind of consistency is what separates those who talk about training from those who actually do it.

Stripes aren't handed out. They're earned through the hard days, the busy weeks, and the decision to keep returning to training when it would've been easier not to. 🔥

When we opened in 2017, the goal was simple — build something the Seymour community didn't have.

A gym serious enough for competitors chasing the highest levels. Welcoming enough that a complete beginner or a homeschool family feels right at home from day one. 🥋
