The epic 2026 WHSYC racing season (best ever?) went out like a whisper - light rain and 0-5 kts of wind, for an almost 90 minute lap around the buoys in a single race.

Maniac, Morning Mist, Madrona, and Wild Thing fought for every inch, mustering all the light wind sailing prowess they had. There might have been a bit of paddling. There might have even been a beer run by crew swimming ashore. There was a spicy protest, and redress awarded to Maniac. Competitors pulled out all the tricks for our final race day on Resurrection Bay.

In the end, Wild Thing came away victorious in the Summer Series - congratulations to Liam, Melanie, and their crew.

WHSYC has been hosting regattas in Resurrection Bay for decades, and we can barely remember a year like this. Every boat is leagues ahead of their 2025 skill level, and the competition is ferocious.

As our PRO, Gary Fung, would say - whatever it takes to get on the podium. We can't wait to see what 2027 brings.

Ladies and gentlemen - we officially have the 2026 Alaska Cup in the books! And it might have been the best ever.

With five awesome competitors on the line - Maniac, Mambo, Morning Mist, Madrona, and Wild Thing, WHSYC Members embarked on two days of epic racing in Resurrection Bay.

Competition was fierce, with crowded start lines, penalty turns, and kites flying. Tourists gathered at the Sea Life Center to watch the finish line.

In the end, Wild Thing took the title this year. Congrats to the victorious crew!

The Coast Guard does not have a Channel 16 distress listening watch in the following areas: Seward, Southwestern PWS, Resurrection Bay, and Blying Sound. Mariners are requested to relay distress calls in these areas to the nearest Coast Guard unit or contact Coast Guard Sector Western Alaska and U.S. Arctic at (866) 396-1361.

U.S. COAST GUARD SECTOR WESTERN ALASKA AND U.S. ARCTIC
PLANNED MARITIME COMMUNICATIONS OUTAGE ADVISORY: PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND

Prince William Sound, Alaska – From May 31, 2026 to July 3, 2026, remote communications sites in Prince William Sound will undergo planned shutdowns for site upgrades resulting in intermittent communications outages. These upgrades will complete the final phase of a VHF modernization project which will significantly improve system reliability throughout Prince William Sound.

To prepare for temporary communications gaps during these upgrades, mariners are encouraged to take the following safety steps:
• Monitor VHF Channel 16 closely for local Broadcast Notices to Mariners (BNM) detailing active outages
• Leave a detailed float plan with a reliable shore-side contact
• Thoroughly inspect and test all safety gear—including verifying that EPIRB/PLB registrations are current and satellite communications are operational—prior to getting underway

Spots available from Port Townsend to Ketchikan from May 23 - June 7 as well as from Sitka to Seward June 14 - 21.
