I often hear from religious people—especially within Christianity—who believe that yoga is not aligned with their faith or somehow contradicts their beliefs. Yoga is simply a mind–body connection. It is a practice that has existed across many cultures and traditions. Buddhism is one example of a tradition that utilizes yoga, but yoga itself is not a religion.
The word yoga means union or oneness—the ability to move, stretch, and breathe with awareness. Practicing yoga does not mean you are following or worshiping any religion. It can become spiritual as the body and mind connect, and in that connection, many people naturally recognize a higher power—but that recognition does not make yoga a religion.
Some movements or postures are sometimes misunderstood or assumed to represent something they do not. These assumptions are simply not true. Yoga is movement, breath, and awareness—nothing more and nothing less.
Don’t waste any more time believing yoga isn’t right for you. You can become the best version of yourself within any religion you practice by simply moving your body and connecting your mind and spirit through breath.
