Maria the Trainer

Maria the Trainer Maria Brezler: In-person and Virtual Personal Trainer/Rowing Coach/Boot Camp Coach w/ 20 years exper I am driven to help others realize their full potential.

I have been a fitness and wellness coach for more than 20 years as well as a lifelong athlete. I started playing basketball when I was 8 and practiced diligently everyday since until I walked onto the women’s basketball team at Gonzaga University. While on campus, I was recruited for the rowing team and took on playing two D1 sports my freshman year. That was probably one of the most physically ch

allenging times of my life. What I know to be true is that if you want to be great at something, then you need to commit to it whole-heartedly. As such, I chose rowing and set my sights on making an Olympic team. I was a two-time All-American rower and trained for 7 years post-grad at the elite level. I was ranked as one of the top 25 rowers before I retired from rowing in 2011. Even though I never made an Olympic team, I gave it everything I had and then some. I found my peak performance. I excelled in ways I never imagined and failed a lot along the way. It was this journey of ups and downs, wins and losses, that made me realize achieving your full potential is not destination but a lifelong journey. Today, I’m a full time personal trainer and rowing coach. For years as an athlete and coach, I witnessed people training diligently at the gym or on the water and never reach their fitness goals. What was apparent to me, but not to them, were two things: One, you don’t always have to work harder to reach your fitness goals; you just need to work smarter. Two, what works for one person doesn’t apply to everyone. What I’m best in the world at is seeing my clients for who they are – not who they think they should be. Often times, when we operate from a place of where we think we should be, and not where are, we set ourselves up for failure, disappointment, and injury. By meeting my clients where they are, I am able to work within their strengths, weaknesses, and limitations so that they find success and become who they aspire to be. I treat and respect each client as their own unique person knowing that no two people are alike. It’s through this process that I am able to help my clients achieve longterm results. Lastly, I want you to know that I am so much more than just a trainer. I’m a wife to an incredibly strong, driven, and talented woman. With her I have two beautiful children who are non-stop entertainment. I’m also an environmentalist, a lover of nature, and a community builder. I strive to constantly learn and evolve with fitness by enhancing my understanding of health as well continually challenge myself as an athlete. I’ve grown from basketball player into rower, into CrossFitter, and now tennis. With each new educational course I take, sport I play, and hike I embark on, I am challenging myself to realize my full potential, and I hope one day to help you realize yours.

Meet Karin, she’s the queen of keeping her fitness routine well rounded. She strength trains with me once a week for an hour, does yoga one day, Pilates one day, tennis once or twice a week and rounds things out with long walks.

We do a lot of single limb and multi-dimensional strength training.

Like many people, if you’re not able to fit all this in, strength training is going to give you the best benefits if that’s the only thing you can fit in.

Benefits of strength training for women. Especially peri/post menopausal women.
-increased bone density
-enhanced metabolism
-improved cardiovascular health
-increased muscle mass = strength
-helps manage weight loss
-reduces risk of chronic disease
-boosts mental wellbeing
-and so much more

Meet Gabby (top right) a strong and driven athlete determined to make a D1 rowing team. Gabby came to work with me back in 2023. She was on a local rowing team and had a decent 2k erg score but not enough to make a D1 rowing program.

Gabby worked incredibly hard on her high school team, on her own and with me. When we trained, we focused on more than just her 2k erg score as coaches want more than that.

Gabby had the right size for a D1 rower, the drive and determination, enough experience rowing on the water to help a novice team but a very short timeline to prove to coaches that she could make a difference at their program. So we focused on her strength. She could out lift any female high school junior I’ve had and we used that to build her “resume”. Max squat, max deadlift, max chest press and row. Colleges want a strong well rounded athlete who has proved they CAN do the work and they want to do the work. And that was Gabby.

Congratulations on making it to University of Virginia! I hope you have a spectacular career there!

Meet Isabelle, she plays midfield soccer at McDonogh school. She started working with me last summer when she was preparing for her freshman year.

In addition to playing for McDonogh she also plays for Maryland united u15 ECNL and has been invited to US soccer Youth ID clinics this winter.

As if being this successful in soccer wasn’t enough, she also runs track and is competing at nationals in the Freshman 400m in March.

Together we work on her agility, balance and stabilization to help with her quickness and injury prevention.

She’s an absolutely spectacular athlete and I love working with her.

keep an eye on this one!

Meet Mark, a competitive 14 almost 15 year old hockey player. I started working with Mark when he was 12 years old. He came to me after he had recently recovered from a back injury. Since then he has managed to work through a number of other hockey injuries, but continues to get stronger and better.

We primarily focus on strength and stability in his core and lower body to help him stay on his skates when he slams into his opponents. On the days he’s already wiped from a tournament or healing from an injury we focus on foam rolling and mobility.

Mark is a committed and driven athlete trying to balance not only school and his sport but also the other key components on becoming a well rounded athlete long term:
Strength
Balance
Mobility
Flexibility
Nutrition
Mental Toughness
Rest and Recovery
And of course fun!

Some of my favorite clients to work with are young athletes. As a former collegiate and elite level rowing coach, I love working with athletes who are determined to get better no matter what sport they are playing.

This is my client Sammy, she worked incredibly hard her entire high school career rowing at Annapolis Junior Rowing Club. She would come in to see me sometimes at 6 AM before school and rowing practice later that day. Her hard work and dedication paid off and she is now an amazing contributor on the Drexel Rowing team.

Meet my client Nancy. She’s in her 60’s and her goals are to get stronger and more fit so she can continue to help juggle her adorable grandkids. She is also on and off a boat and jet ski during the summer months and wants to be able to hop on and off the dock with ease.

Nancy works out with me twice a week for 30 minutes and we focus on strength, balance, cardio and flexibility. Keep it up Nancy and great job in your photo shoot 😉.

No matter what age you are, I’m able yo design a workout for your needs.
