Running in the CT... upcoming week!
Thanks all!!!
The City of Seneca has a new outdoor attraction for families to enjoy. AER Disc Golf Course, is opening for play. Named after Al and Erma Robke, Disc Golf is a flying disc sport in which players throw a disc at a target; it is played using rules similar to golf. The course can be designed as a nine or eighteen hole course; Seneca has a nine hole course.
Players complete a hole by throwing a disc from a tee area toward a target, throwing again from the landing position of the disc until the target is reached. Usually, the number of throws a player uses to reach each target are tallied (often in relation to par), and players seek to complete each hole, and the course, in the lowest number of total throws.
A project started by Kevin Robke and made possible from funds of the Al and Erma Robke estate was constructed at Skoch Park just east of the swimming pool.
Kevin had the idea for the course and took it to the city for approval but since he lived out of town he need someone to facilitate the construction and over see the completion of the project.
In stepped Peter Ganstrom, who happen to be looking for an project to complete his journey to eagle scout.
"Kevin was the brains behind the project," Ganstrom said. "He came up with the idea, helped design the course, and he also gave a lot of motivation for the project."
Already a fan of the sport it didn't take much convincing to get Ganstrom on board with the project.
βMy dad and I gathered sponsorships for the hole signs and then ordered and installed them. The city contributed several hours of labor and paid for the concrete pads after a discount was given by Seneca Ready Mix,β Ganstrom explained. βThe project took a good five months before full completion. Much of that time was spent waiting for the signs to arrive, battling weather and setting dates where everyone could attend.β
There were a lot of helping hands along the way and much need community support to get this project completed. Peter and Kevin wish to thank the City Council, Elder Construction, Suther Building Supply and Luckeroth Ready Mix for their generous support of this project.
Seneca Recreation Director David Hutfles said discs are available through the city to rent or purchase and hopes the community will get out and take advantage of this new outdoor activity.
βI havenβt seen many people out here playing yet, but my troop is planning an outing here,β said Ganstrom. βSo hopefully others will see how fun this sport is and jump right in and give it a try.β
