New blue belt to welcome into the fold! Can’t be more proud of Jake. Always early to help clean the mats, always down to open for open mats, always randomly inverting in rolls just to see what happens. We were super pumped when we got the approval to slap the belt on him, and can’t wait to see where he goes in his skill development from here. First time to promote someone during a nogi class, but I think the surprise paid off; especially when seeing the new belt covered in sweat after setting it.

Apologies to for the late post, but I want to congratulate him for earning his blue belt. He’s one of those guys that make you mad because he picks things up like a sponge, but it’s great to have as a teacher. After getting the ok we slapped the belt on him and did what started and has become a tradition of “setting the belt” where all the blue belts get a round with him without a rest. Of course I waited to the end where he was dog tired just so I could highlight reel him.

I want to bring recognition to the Jones brothers on their hard earned blue belts. They were some of the first to walk though the door and stick around, so after getting the thumbs up from I decided to surprise them Monday night.

When I was in the Marines my shop had a tradition of when you got promoted you were given old, worn chevrons from your mentors the rank above you as introduction to being seen as a peer. With their training primarily under me I felt it right to get a new belt and hand them mine.

Brent received the one I was promoted with; which was Mike Houston’s belt that I received in the same tradition, and Jordan received the belt I wore until he did. Wear them well.
