As a dance teacher, every once in a while I think we need to stop and remember that we actually followed our dream.

Think about that.

At some point we were kids who loved dance. We had no idea where it would take us. We just knew we loved being in the studio.

And now, somehow, dance became our life.

It may not always be easy, and some days it may not look anything like the dream we had when we were young.

But we got to build a life around something we love.

Not everybody gets that chance.

After all these years in dance, I’m still learning, still trying new things, and still figuring some of it out as I go. I don’t think we ever get to the point where we have every answer. And honestly, I don’t think we need to.

But I wonder how many good ideas we’ve talked ourselves out of because we weren’t sure they would work. A class we wanted to offer. A different way of teaching something. A project we’ve been thinking about for years. We get excited, then we start questioning ourselves until we’ve found ten reasons not to do it.

Think about what happens when we choreograph. Sometimes we know where we’re going, and sometimes we have eight counts and a lot of hope! But we get into the studio, put on the music, and work with the dancers. Something happens that gives us the next idea.

We change our minds. We try it again. We couldn’t have figured all of that out before we started.

I believe we need to give ourselves permission to work through other parts of our lives the same way. We can care about doing something well without expecting to know exactly how it will go.

Trying something and realizing it needs work doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have tried.

So maybe this is the week we give that idea a chance. Try it with one class. Ask someone to work on it with you. Be willing to say, “I’m figuring this out.” We don’t stop being students because we’ve become teachers, and there’s still so much for us to discover.

We’ve completed our first week of dance! It’s going to be a great year!

Classes start Tuesday! We can’t wait to see our returning dancers and our new students! We’re looking forward to a great year!

Another DYW over and done. All the girls did a fantastic job and as always, the production was awesome! Dallas County awarded $12,000 in scholarships as well as $1,144,000 in college granted scholarships. We’re so proud of McConnell Twins student Alia Liles for winning awards in the talent and interview categories.
