These were some fun times. Some exceptional leadership folks on this roster.

Many of these freshmen went on to reach the highest level of success in program history, reaching the Sweet 16 in their senior season, while fending off the Covid epidemic and all of the discipline it took to get there. Masks, keeping our social interactions to our small group, testing several times a week, cleaning off the balls after every practice.

Leadership, accountability, loyalties, team priority, and keeping the "we" over the "me" paid historic dividends.

And then Covid fallout changed so much in the following years. I don't know if a team can ever meet those same restrictive levels now. Finding similar success in the era of the Transfer Portal, institutions yielding to retention threats, and a culture shift that focuses on individual expeiences over program success is a high hurdle to get over....but the right leadership can go a long way in finding success if they have institution and coaching staff support.

It takes guts and most of these players had it.

When an institution faces pressure to terminate a coach, there are often underlying factors at play that are not publicly disclosed, and the backlash can ultimately prove more beneficial and satisfying to the coach than the criticism.

This looks like a much better situation for the future of the program than last season. Johnny at the helm and what appears to be a very good hire for the intern position. With a few good recruiting years and reshaping the culture, SUVB can return to prominence.

This is a great hire for our SUVB ohana. Johnny has a proven history of success, not only in the wins and losses, but in developing young women into positive contributors of society by creating a culture of unity and accountability. I have high hopes that Coach Powel will lead the program to great successes, if given the fiscal and administrative support needed. I am excited to see the future recruits that will be brought to SUVB under Johhny's leadership.

Other than the usual challenges of learning the current culture and roster personalities, DIII is a different animal than Community Colleges that will take time to learn. I'm sure that my former colleagues will be excited to provide guidance and competition opportunities to the new man at the helm, and that administration of the institution continues to support the program in what it needs to once again become a national contender.

Lou Ann and I are headed back "home" to Oahu the last 2 weeks of June. We will be freed up after the 22nd.

People always ask us to take them along. We have taken numerous adult groups in the past but hadn't planned a group this time.

HOWEVER, once again folks are asking.

So here's my proposition...if 12 people COMMIT to going by the end of February, I'll make the group arrangements. Dates would be approx. June 23-30 arriving home on 7/1 early A.M. (To and from JFK). Only 1 island, Oahu, to save $$.

Final Cost TBD (approx. $3500/person)which would include your non-stop flight from/to JFK, Pearl Harbor, 'Iolani Palace, Bishop Museum, Diamond Head hike, Polynesian Cultural Center, hotel room (dbl occupancy), hikes, sight seeing, ground transportation on island, and a deep dive into Hawaiian Culture.

BUT you pay for your meals (except for 1 luau at PCC) and you pay for your baggage fees ($40 each way for 1st checked bag).

Due to logistics we have to limit it to 12 people regardless of age.

If fewer than 12 people COMMIT by the end of day, February 28th, but you still want to go, I'll help you make your own arrangements and provide on-island guidance but will not do the legwork.

With great sorrow I share with you the passing of my friend and iconic Track and Field Coach, Jim Taylor. He was a staple in the athletic department of SU for many years. He was a fantastic coach, a great mentor, a wonderful colleague, and a dear friend.

Rest in aloha JT. Words cannot fully express the gratitude so many of us share in having worked with you, and been befriended by you. You lived a full life of worth.

Our thoughts, prayers, and best wishes are with your family.

I said to Lou Ann as the game looked to go Penn State's way, "This could be the first NCAA D1 Women's Volleyball championship that will see its first female coach winning it."

Prior to the NCAA recognizing women's sports, there was a female coach that won a National Championships under the AIAW, the governing body of Women's sports pre 1982. I was living in Logan, Utah in 1978 when it happened. Without nearly the fanfare, Utah State won. The NCAA didn't recognize women championships until 1982. Over 4 decades without a female coach winning a D1 Women's Volleyball Championship seems surreal. This is not to bash on male coaches, but to celebrate a moment in Women's sports.

History, (or HERstory if you like) in the making.
