It's amazing how fast a dad can go from ZERO to HERO. Gatlin and a friend and I fished a couple days ago and my buddy had a good day. He is a novice and just getting started. He made great progress and caught 3-4 really nice fish. Gatlin who was born with a fly rod in his hands got nothing and dad "sucked". Well I talked Gatlin into going for a quick float yesterday in the rain and it was total redemption. Dads now a HERO again, until next time anyway. To make it even nicer, he was fishing a bamboo rod he and I made for him.

Been having a really good time fishing with some great people. We've lost some good ones and landed some great ones. I love watching the progression of fly fishing skills develop over time. All three of these guys have steadily improved. Feeding fish are scarce at times on the Yakima and being able to SET UP your bug on a good drift makes a big difference in success. When you get the opportunity to see the fish feed, make that ONE good cast, throw a little mend and get that fish to rise the rest is easy..........sort of.

Dang it I love the Skwala stonefly season. Coming out of winter and getting amazing eats on dry flies is just what the doctor orders. I especially love getting on the water at 11 and being off by 3. Short floats with great fishing. We've landed some good ones and lost some great ones but good action during heat of the day and fun company. I'm hoping for good fishing for the next 6-10 days.

What do you do once you feel good about the tapers you got dialed in for your bamboo trout speys? Recruit some family to go cast them and get lines and tips dialed for the rods. We got 4 rods out today and we were all very happy with how they performed. One took some playing with but found it really liked a 325 Scandi Short. These trout spey rods almost cast themselves once matched with the right lines and sink tips. Slow, slow, slow down and enjoy the cast. Don't try to power anything and just relax and let the rod do its job. Good afternoon on the river.

I hate self promotion. I sure wish I could keep up with this Facebook thing. I guess I'd just rather be making fly rods. Been playing with Quads{4 sided rods instead of 6 sided} this winter. I build a whole family of Edwards taper including a 7 footer, two 71/2 footers and an 8'. All are 4 sided and 4/5 weights and cast amazing. I've been using the 8' 5wt as my winter nymphing stick and I like it a lot.

I've also been getting ready for some trout spey fun. With the shoulder surgery I had last year I'm thinking that I'm going to be spending more time with the Scandi lines. These rods vary in lengths from 9'9" to 11'4" and are in the 200-350 grain window. Say 3 to 5 weight rods. I used to do a bunch of spey fishing for steelhead and spent time casting everything from Burki's to Sage and I just cant describe the pleasure I have in casting these bamboo trout speys. Its slow and forgiving and they almost cast themselves. These aren't for heavy articulated stuff but will do sculpzillas and other similar weighted flies with no problem.

Well, my daughter NEEDED to get out and do some fishing today. What a great and fun day. Touched 20-30 fish and landed a bunch with 3 between 18-20" Not counting the huge sucker and whitefish. Dang she is turning into a great fly angler.

The only thing better than 16-20" cuttys and bows in Montana is doing it with bamboo. What a great trip my wife and I had. Lots of insane hopper fishing and met some great people on the rivers we fished. Every time I go to that great state I just want to stay.
