We are all on one or both side of this, always.
Either you are trying to get in front of someone, or someone is trying to get in front of you.
This week, someone DM’d me here on LinkedIn looking to start a conversation.
From what I could tell, I was probably on a list.
What he did not know was that I already have a point of contact with his organization.
If he has a corporate account with broader messaging access, that may not matter much.
If he does not, then he only has a limited number of those outreach opportunities.
So before anything else:
How well are you using them?
The conversation happened anyway.
I asked how he thinks about outreach and conversations.
He said he does not track a fixed ratio.
He also said he prefers fewer, more productive relationships.
That sounds reasonable.
Who does not?
But those two statements together create the real question.
If you prefer fewer, more productive conversations, but you do not track them, how do you know how much time you are spending on the conversations that are not productive?
So I gave him one simple example.
4 wrong conversations
× 1 hour each
= 4 hours a week
= 208 hours a year
If your time is worth:
$25/hour = $5,200 a year
$50/hour = $10,400 a year
$100/hour = $20,800 a year
$200/hour = $41,600 a year
That is what just four wrong conversations a week can cost you in time and money.
And if your outreach itself is limited, every wrong conversation can also cost you another opportunity to reach the right person.
I did not tell him what his real number was.
I do not know it.
Neither did he.
That was the point.
So I asked:
What if you could cut the total time you spend on the wrong people in half? What would that do for you?
Then:
Would you want to do that yourself, or would you like someone to do it for you?
What would that be worth to you?
That whole conversation started because someone reached out to me without knowing I was already connected to his organization.
He said he wanted fewer, better conversations.
But this conversation showed that the selection was happening after contact, not before it.
And because he was not tracking it, there was no way to know how much time,
