September is 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗣𝗧𝗦𝗗 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵.

This month is deeply personal to me because learning about CPTSD helped me put words to experiences I had never been able to articulate. It helped me understand why I thought, felt, and responded the ways I did. And perhaps most importantly, it helped me realize that I wasn’t broken.

That realization didn’t fix everything, but it gave me something I desperately needed: language and understanding.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗖𝗣𝗧𝗦𝗗 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀.

Awareness and education can help us make sense of experiences we’ve struggled to explain for years.

It can help us recognize trauma responses that we may have mistaken for personality flaws.

It can give us language for our lived experiences.

It can reduce shame. And remind us that we’re not alone.

Being a parentified child often means growing up too fast. It can also leave you grieving the childhood you didn’t get to fully experience.

When you had to be responsible for other people’s needs or emotions, you may have learned to be helpful, self-sufficient, and low-maintenance.

You may have become so accustomed to anticipating what everyone else around you needed that you lost touch with your own needs.

You may even feel guilty or uncomfortable acknowledging that something was missing because your parents were doing the best they could.

But you’re allowed to grieve what you didn’t receive.

You’re allowed to acknowledge that you deserved care, support, and space to become your own person.

Were you the child who learned to take care of everyone else? Were you called “responsible” or “mature for your age”?

Parentification isn’t just about being helpful or contributing to household tasks. It happens when a child takes on roles or responsibilities that belong to adults, such as regularly caring for younger siblings, taking on household responsibilities, or becoming responsible for parents’ emotional needs.

When a child repeatedly learns that other people’s needs are their responsibility, it can show up as these patterns in adulthood:
- People-pleasing
- Over-functioning in relationships
- Difficulty maintaining boundaries
- Struggling to ask for help
- Difficulty with resting without guilt

What if being “the responsible eldest daughter” was actually a survival role?

Being the eldest daughter doesn’t automatically mean you’ll develop these patterns. But in families where the eldest child expected to be exceptionally mature, emotionally attuned, or responsible for her parents or younger siblings, they may be more likely to experience parentification or emotional enmeshment.

In these environments, a child may learn:
“I shouldn’t need help”
“It’s my job to keep the peace”
“Other people’s needs come before mine”

Over time, these beliefs can become adaptations that follow them into adulthood, showing up as hyper-independence, people-pleasing, over-functioning, hypervigilance, or difficulty prioritizing their own needs.

These patterns aren’t character flaws. They made sense in the environment you grew up in.

These patterns are not random flaws. They’re adaptations your nervous system developed to protect you.

What if your patterns aren’t flaws, but adaptations?

When a child grows up in an environment where they feel constantly criticized, responsible for others, or unable to depend on adults around them, they learn to adapt in order to feel safe.

Many of the patterns we struggle with adults began as protective responses. Understanding where they came from is the first step toward healing and change.
