Happy National Muay Thai Day! For all the Street Fighter video game nerds out there... If you’ve ever wondered why the video game character Sagat was abnormally tall for a Muay Thai fighter, then that’s because it’s a dual homage to both Sagat and arguably the true GOAT of Muay Thai: Dieselnoi aka The King of the Knees... I remember when I was 10 years old and walking into Rajadamnern Stadium for the first time, and being in complete awe after hearing the entire crowd chant “KNEE” over and over. This was a ritual that was started after Dieselnoi display the true beauty and art of the Thai Clinch combined with the multitude of knee strikes. Gifted with incredible height for a Thai, he defeated all challengers including Muay Thai greats such as Sagat and Samart... He also easily pounced on foreigners including the World Karate Champion of the time. He was forced to retire because there way no one else left to fight. I was truly hoping to meet my favorite Muay Thai fighter when I was able to train in Thailand because he works as a trainer at Master Toddy’s Muay Thai Academy. Sadly, Master Toddy and Dieselnoi got into a brief argument over how to throw a left hook, and I wasn’t able to meet him. They have since kissed and made up! 😜 Sagat was legendary in his own right, and certainly deserving of the Street Fighter idolatry as well as being mentioned as one of the greatest Muay Thai fighters ever... Sagat fought and beat Master Toddy’s first World Champion, the UK’s Ronnie Green, who became one of the greatest foreign Muay Thai fighters of all time... In their fight you can hear Master Toddy screaming at Ronnie Green to throw the COBRA, a direction that Ronnie ignored and ultimately paid the price for it. Eventually, he would listen to Master Toddy, and become a World Champion. Some ignorant people think that because Master Toddy didn’t fight professionally, then he doesn’t deserve the credit that he gets, but if you know anything about martial arts, then you know that some of the best teachers have never fought professionally... If I ever get my opportunity to fight, then you bet your @$$ I’m going to make the most of it...
