I want to do away with the idea of "wasted sets." Endurance, strength, and hypertrophy all follow some of the same programmatic guidelines, but the elasticity attached to different adaptations can accommodate a wide range of different goals, priorities, and values, and make any exercise undertaken with good form and reasonable consistency of value. The only wasted set is the one that didn't happen.

In the light of a New Year, many trainers want either to stir talk of resolutions as a marketing plank, or to downplay the whole idea of resolutions as an obfuscation of the need for year-round drive and consistency.

I'm gonna try something a little different. I have, in the past, discussed the difference between resolution and resolve. That still applies. But what interests me right now is the use of time as a ritual construct. This time - when the days are still short, when holding on to the detritus of the holidays feels like a desperate gambit to fight SAD, when abandoning that sounds like a surrender to the despair of our ugly historical moment and the unfeeling grind of late capitalism - is marked away whether we agree to it or not. For me, it's useful to face the long nights, the financial struggles of the fiscal year turnover, the end of holiday indulgence with a plan that is compassionate, realistic, and process oriented (which isn't antithetical to results oriented, but is designed to free is from the tyranny of improbable metrics).

For me, that means, yes, a dry January, getting my eating back on a sensible (and affordable) track, hitting the gym both more gently and more intentionally, reshuffling values (in my case, a redirection from a temporary detour into hypertrophy and a recommitment to strength, cardio, endurance, and stability).

Now, these goals needn't all be your goals ... and even if they are, your manifestation of them will be different from mine. And that's kind of the point. My whole program is about you determining what your taking your space in the world looks like - how you will move through that space, how you will greet obstacles, how you will care for yourself, how you will recover.

And that's a collaboration. So we can use my expertise to fulfill your interests and terms.

This commentary resonates with me, as a trainer, an actor, a wannabe rock star, a complete nerd. Also, especially, as someone who's fought body image issues my whole life; who struggles with depression & suicidal ideation; who sometimes seeks an approximation of joy in the kitchen, finds moments of peace & respite in front of the TV.

Make no mistake: I admire the discipline that drives this sort of transformation, and I take no issue with the particular stars being discussed. But I also want my clients, and anyone paying attention, to understand that such stringent diets & the aesthetics that emerge therefrom aren't necessarily a healthy metric for progress or self-improvement, and have created a strain of thought in fitness culture where some influencers blend strident absolutism regarding fitness with reactionary takes on economics, politics, and masculinity.

A quick reminder that I offer group personal training - and that finding a partner or partners with whom to train can get you all working out at a tremendous discount from my already low rates! Adding just one training partner to your ticket can get each of you training at half the going market rate for personal training. Those savings pile up even further if you buy a 4-packs or a 9-packs, or if you wanted to try the 1/2 hour core-balance-reactive intensives.

08/16/2025

In the interest of expanding my practice, I'm going to start offering a 1/2 hour session, focused on core-balance-reactive (or core-balance-plyometric, in more contemporary jargon) option, as a way to help potential clients pinched for money and time. Feel free to DM me about specific rates, but know that, as with my one-hour sessions, discounts are available for buying in bulk (either a 4-pack or a 9-pack).

These 1/2 hour sessions are going to focus on what is actually the core of my practice - that is, the ... erm, core. No, not the abs. Well, inclusive of the abs, but the re**us abdominis, the locus of our envy for actors who play superheroes and underwear models, is actually the focus of too much so-called "core" exercises that are usually just variations on a crunch or situp, which do very little for the transverse abdominis, iliopsoas, internal obliques, gluteus medius or minimus. The cosmetic effect sought has more to do with body fat, anyway, and while I can give you (mostly dietary) strategies for dealing with that, it's not really the focus of my practice.

What's more, those kinds of core exercise often neglect to demonstrate functional application. Following NASM's guidelines for core-balance-reactive exercise gives us leeway to demonstrate core strength in stable or isolated circumstances, in motion while correcting or navigating imbalance (on one foot or in a destabilized circumstance), and at speed through launchings and landings of the body. And my adding martial arts techniques, principles, and drills keeps it fun, interesting, cerebral.

Clients seeking a less expensive option will get the benefit of the guiding principles at the heart of my own workouts while learning a warmup or short workout that can work as an adjunct to their own private lifestyle and pursuits, physical or otherwise.

Always seek the structure that enables freedom from that structure. Not freedom from *any* structure, because there's no such thing, but the freedom from the dictates that separate any given structure from the nuances of what you, the individual require, the structures that enable and adapt to your organic flow.

Meeting my clients where they are, meeting the body where it is, is part of my quest to honor physical culture over gym culture. To invite the body into our pursuits, our vocations and avocations, our beliefs and practices, our ways of being in the world. I'm looking to reconcile us with some semblance of who we were before classical dualism came to separate the lives of our minds and the actualization of the self from our existence in the material world, and thus material body.

But, y'know, by sweating and playing and picking up heavy objects; by taking walks and learning about our neighborhoods and surrounding terrain.
