Letter we sent out yesterday:
Hello Dizzy Dazers! We’re looking forward to hosting all of you at the 11th Dizzy Daze this coming Saturday. Here is some pertinent info:
First, the road: DON’T RUN ON IT! If we see you do so, we’ll disqualify you. Besides, we don't want to spend all day scraping you out of the grill of a car.
Second, DO NOT BRING VALUABLES. Three cars were broken into in 2017, despite us being right next to the parking lot.
Time/location:
Both the 5-hour and 12-hour will start at 7 a.m. at the north end of Green Lake near the Bathhouse Theater, 7358 West Green Lake Dr. N., Seattle, WA 98115. Parking is available in the adjacent lot, as well as on the street. Check-in for both races starts at 6 a.m. (If you get there before the race directors, please leave the parking spots closest to the grassy section open!). The 5-hour ends at noon, and the 12-hour at 7 p.m.
Timing:
Once again we are using chip timing by NW Endurance Events! That said, YOU MUST WEAR YOUR BIB ON THE FRONT as we’ll still be recording numbers on the big boards. If you fold up your bib, make sure you do NOT fold the chip. If you're going to put it on a leg, put it on the left leg.
Course/Race format:
You will be running the 3.2-mile outside loop. You will complete as many loops as you can within your race timeframe. You don’t have to run the entire 5 or 12 hours, but let the timers know when you are done. Note: we only count full laps! (More info on “counting” this race for Half Fanatics/Marathon Maniacs below).
Kibble:
Your hosts are ultrarunners of middling skill but extensive experience. We love ultras for the food, and that's what we'll have for you. Expect the usual Gatorade and water, fruit and sugary snacks, but also pancakes, bacon (MMMMM… bacon), bean & avocado wraps and fresh pizzas right out of our portable oven. If this is your first ultra it'll seem weird, but our intent is to corrupt you forever and turn you toward the Ultra Side.
Now, the weather:
Your guess is as good as mine, but I don't think we'll set any records. It'll likely be cool and dewy in the morning, rainy at some point and sunny at some point. Your mom called and said bring a coat just in case. We'll have a tarp for drop bags; we can cover the bags with the tarp, but we still recommend something rain-compatible like a cooler or a dry sack. While the tarp will be right next to the aid station, we can not completely guarantee their safety. So please, no valuables!
Awards, yes, AWARDS!
We’ve upped our game this year and will be handing out awards: overall male/female for both the 5-hour and 12-hour, as well as some “special” awards. These will be handed out immediately after the respective races.
Will this “count?”
As far as the race is concerned, as long as you run one 3.2-mile loop, you’ll be listed in the results. However, we know some (okay, many) of you want the race to count toward either Half Fanatics or Marathon Maniacs stats. We get ya, and actually started the 5-hour so that the Fanatics can join in on the fun. That said, we don’t make it easy :) Here are the deets:
5-hour:
If you’re looking for Fanatics stats, then you’ll have to run 5 laps, for a total of 16 miles (4 laps will only get ya 12.8 miles). For Maniacs stats, you’ll have to run 9 laps, for a total of 28.8 miles. Both must be run within the 5-hour timeframe (7 a.m. to noon).
12-hour:
Half Fanatics — you’re s**t outta luck and this race doesn’t count for you. Maniacs — you must run 10 laps, or 32 miles.
Here’s a handy distance chart.
See you on Saturday!
