Cheasty Trails and Bike Park Restoring habitat and building Seattle's first forested mountain bike trails in Cheasty Greenspace

We are group of Seattle neighbors restoring Cheasty Greenspace in Seattle's Beacon Hill / Columbia City neighborhood. We are building mountain bike and hiking trails to create safe access to nature and recreation in this SE Seattle parkland. Feeling Grateful !!

Kat Sweet Sweetlines was able to keep our mtn bike camp going with the Boy and Girls Club on MLK for the 4th year in a row! All this week we did training on their play field followed by riding in the Cheasty trails.

Another huge thanks to the operations director Denise, for allowing this positive seed to grow within the Boys and Girls Club. So far its been 4th and 5th graders, next year tweeners? teenagers? that would be amazing.

Pickup some garbage to celebrate Earth Day? Wednesday April 22 at 5:30pm. The rain should have subsided by then.

I'll be starting at the top, and working my way downhill in the southern bike trail area. Meet me by the picnic table. I'll leave a bunch of garbage bags on the table under a rock for late arrivals. Wear some thick gloves for touching gross stuff.

Now that the natural areas crew has done such a good job of clearing the underbrush, the garbage is super easy to spot. Most is along the multi-use trail...some on the two bike trails. If you see sections of green mesh, it also needs to get hauled out. Its left over from the original trail build.

We'll make a pile of full bags right on the shoulder of Cheasty Blvd.

Step 1: remove weird branches from two muddy spots
Step 2: stomp a surplus piece of bridge decking into the worst spot
Step 3: stomp some bricks in into the smaller mud hole just before it.

years ago someone dumped a whole chimney worth of bricks in the forest... :)

MUD ALERT!!
There is still one particularly nasty, clay/mud section on the return trail (heading down into a right hand berm) We need to address it with hardscape, rocks, gravel etc, we really need to give it a break until things dry out a bit....So I have some alternate route suggestions to keep tires off of that messy section.

#1 if you are a downhill fan (like Joel and I) you can rip the downhill section, then on the return trail, take the cut through trail right before the first bridge up to Cheasty Blvd., take the shoulder trail to the top and repeat!

#2 if you are a mileage fan ..both Paul's :) after the downhill section, hop onto the green multi-use trail and use it for your southward journey, back to the climbing trail...and repeat!

there is still one particularly nasty section that we need to address with rock and gravel....I would encourage folks to not ride that section until we get some drier days...second post coming with details / suggestions.

Drainage festival #4? Sunday the 22nd at 10am. Bring your tall boots, it will be messy, but satisfying :) This will be near the last bridge on the mountain bike trail heading south. Come in through View Point Park in the Rainier Vista neighborhood. Walk past the "do not enter" sign (cautiously) and you'll see the location at the bottom of the hill.
