WDFW is creating a new policy that will determine how native wild trout are harvested across Washington’s streams, rivers, and lakes. The Coastal Cutthroat Coalition sees this as a critical moment because the decision will have long-lasting impacts on wild trout fisheries. Over the past decade, the Coalition and its partners have conducted extensive research showing that Washington’s wild trout are now smaller, younger, and less abundant than they were historically, but that careful monitoring and responsible management can reduce risks during recovery. The Coalition believes the new policy must rely on the best available science and acknowledge existing uncertainties. Their guiding principle: when there is no clear data on stock health, wild trout should be managed under non-harvest regulations.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Show up, in person. WDFW Commission is holding a meeting to discuss this policy and potentially vote on it. We need as many of the Cutthroat Trout community as possible to attend this meeting.
