Tonight we will read John 20:15-23.

One of the passages that stands out is John 20:19” On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”

John 20:19 shows that even when the disciples were afraid and hiding, Jesus came to them with peace.

The locked doors could not stop the risen Jesus. His first words were not correction, but comfort: “Peace be with you.”

This reminds us that Jesus meets us in fear, anxiety, and uncertainty, and His presence brings peace that the world cannot give.

That’s what stood out to me

Tonight we will read John 20:1–15.

One of the passages that stands out is John 20:1–10, which describes the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

After reading the passage, I asked the question, Why is the resurrection so significant to the Christian faith?

Jesus claimed to be “the resurrection and the life.” If He promised eternal life, yet could not raise Himself from the dead as He foretold, then His claims would be false.

But we know Jesus Christ is not a fraud. He always keeps His promises.

Jesus said He would be crucified and raised from the dead and He did exactly that.

The resurrection proves His victory over sin and death and gives eternal life to all who believe in Him.

In the book of John 3:16 , it says , “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Jesus also declared that “ I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.” (John 11:25–26)

The resurrection confirms that Jesus is who He said He is, the Son of God, God in the flesh, and the Savior of the world.

Tonight we read John 19:31–42.

One of the verses that stood out to me was John 19:34:

“Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.”

I proposed the question: What Old Testament verse references the piercing of Jesus Christ?

We looked at Isaiah 53:5:

“But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed.”

I then asked a follow up question: How did Jesus being pierced and crushed bring peace and healing to us?

The answer is found in the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ. Because Jesus took the punishment for our sins upon Himself, those who place their faith in Him can be forgiven, reconciled to God, and receive eternal life.

As John 3:16 says:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

We read John 19:17-24 tonight.
One of the verses that stood out to me was John 19:26-30.

It reads:
“When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”

I propose the question: When Jesus said, “It is finished,” what did He mean?

Jesus was declaring that the payment for sin was complete.
He took the punishment for sin upon Himself so believers could be forgiven and reconciled to God. The work of salvation was accomplished through His sacrifice on the cross.

That’s why 2 Corinthians 5:21 says:
“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

What stood out to me tonight is that Jesus did not say, “I am finished.” He said, “It is finished.”
The debt of sin was paid in full through Jesus Christ.
