Shinto-Ryu Iai-Battojutsu USA

Shinto-Ryu Iai-Battojutsu USA A school of Japanese swordsmanship. Shinto ryu was founded in 1890 by Hibino Raifu during a period of great change for the martial arts of Japan.

It was created as a way to reinforce the more traditional nature of budo. Our line of Shinto Ryu was brought to the US in 1992 by Robbie Pellett Sensei and is part of the Watanabe ha (line) of Shinto Ryu as taught by Mochizuki Takashi Sensei, founder of Seibu Jyuku. The art is currently taught at Seattle School of Aikido by Jeremy Hulley and Christian Moses.

With the upcoming political changes in the US, we at Japanese Fighting Arts NW need to be explicit that we are a safe space for all races, genders, ages, and sexual orientations. We will not tolerate intolerance and we promise you will not find a more welcoming space to train. In-person community is going to be more important than ever in the coming years and we welcome you to join our small group. All humans deserve safety and respect especially in the face of ignorance, prejudice, and oppression.

I really urge any of you who are trying to get back to normal indoor activities to read through this CDC report on the SINGLE choir practice in WA state that had an 87% transmission rate!!! One single person who later reported mild cold like symptoms attended a single evening practice infected 53 other people and led to three hospitalizations and two deaths. While there are obvious differences to many of the activities many of us miss, there are some specific similarities to the way most martial arts classes are run:
* Indoor space with moderate to low ventilation
* Multiple partner changes
* Common area for water and supplies
* Vigorous breathing
*

On March 17, 2020, a member of a Skagit County, Washington, choir informed Skagit County Public Health (SCPH) that several members of the 122-member choir had become ill.

It’s with great sadness I must announce the closing of our facility, Seattle School of Aikido. One of the first Aikido dojos opened on the West coast, SSA has been open in our location since Mary Heiny founded it in 1976. Despite our best efforts and the generosity of our members, declining membership, increasing costs, and now COVID19 have created a perfect storm that left us with no reasonable choice but to close our doors. It is my hope that we (Japanese Fighting Arts NW) will re-open in due time at some new location.
