I am reminded occasionally of how easy it is to wander away from the Karate. There are reasons people wander, and there are solutions as well. I believe the main solution has to do with motivation.
Recently I've been publishing about Karate promotions. We celebrate promotions because they are the result of good performance, training and motivation.
In Karate, the correlation between performance and training and motivation is essentially simple (but not always easy). As a student, you get promoted because you are motivated to train and perform. Take away the motivation and you are just training. Take away the training and you have neither motivation nor performance. Motivation is the link to training and performance. Motivation is also what keeps you on the path to Karate-Do, the Way of Karate.
Karate is a lifestyle, as I learned in Okinawa. It is a lot more than kicking & punching. And so this correlation between training, motivation and performance can be applied to work, school and many other aspects of life.
One of my favorite quotes:
"Karate can be a life long and rewarding study, not only of fighting skills, self-defense techniques and accomplishments, but of strength, inspiration and motivation."
