Bear sailed the first race in the SORC series… Results not up to standards, but had a great time!

Bear was an absolute rocket ship during the Harvest Moon Regatta; winning  ORC  division A, J-boat manufacture trophy, line honors and the Bacardi cup! This is the third year in a row that we were the first boat to finish and won the Bill Hall memorial trophy (Line honors), but this year was the most impressive victories… Beating a well sailed Santa Cruz 50.

It’s September and that means Harvest Moon Regatta fever for a lot of people! Here’s a little spot of history about one of the most cherished traditions of the LYC Harvest Moon Regatta, the Bacardi Cup.

The Bacardi Cup trophy is presented to the overall winner of the ORC Spinnaker class of the Harvest Moon Regatta, based on corrected time. The presentation occurs at the HMR Awards party and has always been accompanied by a generous splash of Bacardi Rum which the winning Captain and Crew down on stage amidst much joyful shared celebration.

The trophy was obtained the week of January 19, 1987 after many discussions, proposals and meetings between race organizers and members of the Bacardi family. It was decided in the beginning that the Cup had to be different than other race trophies, something unique, an elegant trophy which would be forever recognizable as the LYC Harvest Moon Regatta BACARDI CUP. The winning suggestion was a contemporary silver museum piece brought in from California. The coveted Bacardi Cup was created by Italian artisan Lino Sabattini, one of the most revered Italian silversmiths of the twentieth century. The Bacardi Cup was unveiled at Lakewood’s Commodore’s Ball, January 24, 1987.
