One of the most impactful lessons I learned during my 19-year professional baseball career came from a coach who told me:
“If you don’t like it, play better.”
At first, it sounded harsh. Over time, I realized it wasn’t about criticism, it was about ownership.
We all face adversity, setbacks, unfair situations, and moments where things don’t go our way. It’s easy to complain, make excuses, or focus on what we can’t control. But growth happens when we shift our focus to what we can control: our effort, our attitude, our preparation, and our response.
Whether you’re an athlete, coach, parent, business owner, or someone chasing a dream, this mindset applies. Every challenge is an opportunity to improve. Every obstacle is a chance to grow stronger.
You may not be able to control the circumstances, but you can always control how you respond to them.
Keep working. Keep learning. Keep getting better.
