To put it simply, we can either be rewarded for accomplishing goals and tasks or inherently enjoy the process of doing the thing that gives us these rewards. Either way, we gain (or lose) something from action. Sometimes we can also gain too much of a reward that this inherent enjoyment of something gets lost. Nothing is inherently wrong with motivation, but if thatโs what your foundation is based upon, something like behavior change becomes more of a chore.

Take a step back and look at your purpose. Ground yourself on your core values, not the things you do and what you gain from it. Donโt always purely seek rewards. I canโt begin to tell you how many times during my athletic career and post-athletic career Iโve been demotivated. It was a bit easier to manage being an athlete, because my vision was more clear and I had something I wanted so badly that my actions werenโt dictated by the level of my โmotivational gas tank.โ Plus, my reward came the very last day of my career. I wasnโt content until then, and I did enjoy the process leading up to it because of the bigger picture of what it meant to me and what I valued.

DM me if you are having a difficult time adjusting or need to get back on track whether itโs your athletic performance, movement, or general fitness. Iโd love to help in any way.
