COACHING - The organised provision of assistance to an individual
athlete/group of athletes to help them develop and improve their performance
of their chosen sport (Kent, 2005).
By understanding what coaching is, through the definition and the four crucial
coaching components, a developing coach can start to focus on building more
exceptional coaching attributes.
The four crucial coaching development components that we discuss are:
§ Physical development: This can be attained by increasing sports science
understanding of scientific strength and conditioning practices—physiological
changes within athletes’ bodies.
§ Technical development: This can be developed by increasing academic
understanding of sports science elements, elements such as forces, laws of physics,
biomechanics and anatomy. It will lead to a deeper understanding of why
movements need to be coached and cued a particular way.
§ Tactical development: To understand sport-specific tactical approaches, coaches
must work closely with many types of athletes. Building a philosophy process for each
athlete and the "why" to help increase performance through tactics.
§ Psychosocial development: The coach will need to develop their personal
interactions and behaviours. They will increase the quality of their coach-athlete
relationship. This will lead to improved communication and open doors to a deeper
side of coaching. Sociological and psychological coaching models can be used to achieve this
