A single unsuppressed shot can reach 140-165 decibels, well above the threshold for permanent hearing damage. Passive muffs are a solid budget-friendly option, but electronic muffs let you hear conversation and range commands while still blocking the blast.

Glass early, glass often. 👀

If you're planning a backcountry hunt this fall, May is not too early to start scouting. Quality binoculars on a stable tripod can be the difference between spotting a bull at 800 yards or walking right past him.

Pro tip: slow down your glassing. Most hunters move the glass way too fast and miss animals that are bedded and still.

A few things worth knowing before your next gear purchase: not all fixed blades are created for the same task (field dressing vs. bushcraft vs. camp work), carbon steel holds an edge longer but needs more maintenance than stainless, and a good sheath is just as important as the knife itself.
