June 25th was a rematch of the season opener between the Bombers and Braves. A one run ball game the first time the teams faced each other, the second meeting did not disappoint. The Braves relied on brothers Isaac Lucero and Daniel Stevens to carry the pitching load as the Bombers used Elijah Enomoto-Haole, Ethan Patterson, Joshua Valladares, and Robert Benson. A full staff effort for the Bombers, Enomoto-Haole threw 3 innings, Patterson 2 innings, Valladares 3 innings, and Benson 2 innings while Lucero threw 9 innings for the Braves only to have Stevens pitch the extra inning. A particularly sloppy fielding day for the Bombers kept them from edging a sizeable lead against the Braves. In a constant back and forth battle, it was difficult to string hits together as Lucero accumulated 12 strikeouts in his 9 innings of work (walking none). Tied 5-5 going into the bottom of the 9th, the Bombers hoped Benson could keep the Braves at bay again. Recording the 3rd out with a runner on 3rd base, the Bombers headed to the 10th in hopes of another one run victory over the Braves. Daniel Stevens, now taking the mound for the Braves, recorded 3 strikeouts and a walk in the top of the 10th. Holding onto hope that the Bombers could find a way to get to the 11th for another opportunity to score, the nail biter came to an end in the bottom of the 10th. A lead off double by league veteran Anthony Kittsen and some smart base running allowed the Braves to take a walk off win against the Bombers. Now 2-1 on the season, the Bombers will look to take their 3rd regular season matchup against the Braves and win the season series.

After missing a week from a rainout, June 18th was a matchup between the Bombers and Mariners. A stellar pitching performance for both teams, and a tough 5-2 win for the Bombers as they had to rally past an early 2-0 Mariners lead. Brendan Sweeney of the Mariners and a Corban University graduate held the Bombers to 1 run in 7 innings of work. Brandon Ferris and Luke Calvert completed the pitching efforts for the Mariners as the Bombers had to resort to small ball to chip away. Robert Benson started on the mound for the Bombers, pitching very well - going five innings while allowing two runs. The Bombers resorted to small ball in order to scratch across a couple late game runs before opening up a 5-2 lead. Following a tough outing against the Gherkins of the Wild Wild West League, Josh Valladares (Bombers/Wild Bills) was ready to show his mental toughness. Locking up the Mariners bats in the 6th, 7th, and 8th, Valladares set the table for Ethan Patterson to close. Short staffed and and not in his usual role, Patterson had to come up big for the Bombers as the Mariners came to the plate in the bottom of the 9th. Pitching to contact and getting 2 fly outs, Patterson was able to secure the save and a second win on the season for the Bombers.

June 4th saw the start of the WVMBL season for the 18+ division, and the season opened with a nail biter. A 12-11 win for the Bombers over the Braves, both teams were tested over their 9 inning battle. The Braves jumped out to an early 5-1 lead, but a rally in the top of the 6th saw the Bombers pull ahead 6-5 only to hand the lead back to the Braves (7-6) in the bottom of the 6th. Veterans to the WVMBL, the Braves did not waver when they fell behind 8-7 the following inning. On an offensive tear and going 4-5 overall, Ethan Patterson reclaimed an 8-7 lead for the Bombers in the top of the 7th with a 2 RBI triple as other bats would extend the lead to 11-7 going into the bottom half. [Braves] Scoring two runs to answer back, the score was 11-9 going into the 8th. With the Bombers scoring one and allowing one run in the 8th, the score was 12-10 with the Bombers ahead going into the 9th. The Braves were able to pull within one but the youth of the Bombers ultimately gave them the edge in a tough 12-11 win on a beautiful Friday night in Silverton.
Bombers bats were stifled early by brothers Isaac Lucero and Daniel Stevens who carried the pitching load for the Braves as the Bombers had to use a full compliment of 5 pitchers to quiet the Braves bats. Bombers saw A.J. Stoltey, Joshua Valladares, Ethan Patterson, Sean Mensing, and Robert Benson on the mound in a full staff effort.

Unfortunately, the WVMBL has capped its high school division at 6 teams. If you are still interested in playing, you can sign up as a single player and tryout for their general team. I apologize if this is an inconvenience to anyone, I am certainly disappointed. I am planning to form a high school age team for Salem Baseball Academy's fall baseball league. This league is for anyone in high school in the 2020-2021 school year. If you have an interest in fall baseball please let me know so that I can send out information about it as soon as possible. Good luck this summer with your baseball pursuits. Private lessons are available 7 days a week by appointment.

Players and Coaches:

Due to the uncertainty of many tournaments, I have decided to enter a 16-18 year old team in the Willamette Valley Men's League. This will be a highly competitive team playing against other high school age players from the Willamette Valley area. The season is expected to be 24 games with Sunday double headers and a single mid-week game. There will also be two team practices each week, and specialized workouts offered. Keeper jerseys will be supplied, and players will be encouraged to represent their high school by wearing their school team hat. There will be a designated Covid-19 information and safety officer to ensure the safety of all players, coaches, and fans. The expected team fee is $350 which will cover league fees, professional coaching, field use, insurance, team equipment, etc. If we are able to get a sponsor, the fee may drop as low as $250 per player. If you are interested in playing high level summer baseball or know someone that is, please contact coach Sean Mensing at 5038715623 or [email protected]. This is a great opportunity to get in front of some college scouts and coaches.

Thanks, Coach Mensing

Attention Baseball Players and Coaches:

In an effort to restart baseball in the Willamette Valley I am interested in forming an 18u tournament team. We are looking at tournaments in southwest Washington, Portland, and the Hillsboro area at this time. This team is for serious players who expect to start on their varsity team in 2021, or play college baseball. We expect this to be a AAA Legion or college prep level team. The team will provide professional coaching, no parents involved. Keeper jerseys, individual specialized work, team practices, tournament schedule management, and coaching. The preferred team size is 16 and there will be an application before the tryout. All selected players will receive play time. The estimated player fee is $600 which includes all tournament fees but not travel costs. Coaches may provide transportation when necessary/available. If you are a serious baseball player or coach who could recommend a player of this level, please contact coach Sean Mensing at [email protected] or call 5038715623. More information to come Friday the 5th.

Thank you, lets play ball!
