PLAYER EVALUATIONS (GRADES 4-6)
Player evaluations for incoming 4th-6th grade players will be held in September. Evaluation dates and times will be announced once finalized.
Fourth and Fifth graders will attend one evaluation. Sixth graders must attend two.
TEAM FORMATION
As players progress through the program, the range of skill levels naturally becomes wider. After reviewing several years of player feedback, coaching input, league competition, and tournament eligibility requirements, the Board has continued its approach to team formation to provide the best possible experience for all players.
Team formation each season is based on several factors, including player evaluations, overall participation, and the availability of volunteer coaches. Our goal is to create teams that provide an appropriate developmental and competitive experience for all players while making the best use of available resources.
Grades 4 & 5
Following player evaluations, teams will be formed based on registration numbers, player evaluations, and the availability of volunteer coaches. Depending on the number of registered players, overall roster composition, and coaching availability, the Board may form one or more teams within this age group.
Our goal is to place players in an environment where they can continue developing their basketball skills, build confidence, and enjoy a positive and rewarding team experience.
Grade 6
Following evaluations, team placement will be determined based on registration numbers, player evaluations and the availability of volunteer coaches. Depending on the number of players registered and the overall evaluation results, one or more teams may be formed, including Division 1 (D1) and/or Division 2 (D2) teams.
Our goal is to provide an appropriately competitive environment where every player can continue to develop, contribute, and enjoy the game while preparing for basketball opportunities at the next level.
PRACTICES
Grades 4-6 should expect one to two practices each week throughout the season.
While many practices will be held in Scarborough, gym availability may require some practices to take place in Portland or South Portland.
Grades 7-8 teams will not have dedicated STB practices.
LEAGUE PLAY
All STB teams will participate in the Maine Basketball League (MBL).
League games are typically played on weekends throughout the Greater Portland area, generally within 30-45 minutes of Scarborough.
While the official league schedule has not yet been released, the season generally:
Begins in mid-to-late November
Runs through early February
Does not include league games during winter school break
Some teams may be eligible for a "Holiday Hoops" tournament during winter school break; those teams will be notified when the season begins so families can plan accordingly.
REGISTRATION FEES
Grades 4-6
Registration Fee: $295 per player
Game Uniform: $90
Reversible Practice Jersey: $25
Game uniforms and reversible practice jerseys are required. Players who have an STB uniform and/or reversible practice jersey from a prior season that still fits do not need to purchase replacements.
Players who do not have the required items, or whose existing uniform or practice jersey no longer fits, will order them during registration.
Grades 7-8
There is no registration fee collected at the time of registration.
If enough players and volunteer coaches are available to form one or more teams, participating families will share the league registration fee, which is expected to total approximately $1,350-$1,500 per team.
Returning STB players may continue using their existing STB game uniforms if they still fit and are in good condition.
Players who need a new uniform will be able to order one after teams are finalized. Uniform information and final player costs will be communicated shortly after registration closes.
VOLUNTEER COACHES NEEDED
STB is a volunteer-driven organization, and the number of teams we are able to form each season depends on having enough volunteer coaches.
We are actively seeking both head and assistant coaches for all grade levels. If you are interested in coaching or assisting, please indicate your interest during registration.
Coaching experience is helpful but not required. STB provides resources and support throughout the season.

Please Note: This program is intended for players who are entering 7th or 8th grade for the 2026–2027 school year. Participation on a middle school basketball team is not required, but the program is designed to complement the middle school season.
