Club volleyball is not recreational or school ball and I know it’s hard to remember. This is a good short little read about it
A post that’s clearly reacting to a common early-season frustration in club volleyball. It’s blunt, but it reflects something that comes up every year once playing time starts getting uneven. This was shared by a volleyball parent trying to reset expectations.
Parents, the season in our area just got started. I’ve already heard complaints about playing time! Equal, Equal, Equal!!!!
It’s not going to be EQUAL people!!!
Go play recreational volleyball for your local church or YMCA. Club sports don’t promise equal playing time. In fact that’s what most parents love about club sports. It’s suppose to be at another level right? Well it’s not gonna be at another level if everyone plays equal.
Some of you don’t even understand the sport yet complain about playing time.
Substitution rules, rotations where the coach has specific players to play certain spots. Yes, even at 10/11U/12U they aren’t gonna get everything equal!
Talked to a ref yesterday and she’s a local Varsity coach for a 2A school. She is trying to get out of the career due to parent issues. She was young, energetic, loves the sport, loves kids…and here she is trying to quit cause the expectations on a coach are ridiculous.
Play everyone equal.
Oh, but you have to keep seniors cause they are seniors.
Try not to cut too many freshman.
When parents ask you why , don’t tell them the district told you to keep seniors.
And the list can go on and on.
Advice for this year!
Be glad your kid is on a team.
Be glad your kid gets to practice every week.
Help your kid through adversity, cause I know there’s little issues on each team.
Teach your kid to not give up even if things don’t go their way.
Be supportive of EVERYONE on the team even if you don’t like them.
Try your best to not talk negatively about the coach (if you could do better I’m sure they will take your application next year).
Then if that’s not the club for you then change it up next year.
Good luck!
Do you think the expectation around “equal playing time” is getting worse each year, or has it always been like this?
