Paul Warner is no beginner at golf. At 89 years of age, he’s been playing since his early 20s. He joined a group of his friends and golf became a regular recreation that lasted a lifetime.
Paul has been a frequent patron at Henderson Golf Club. Weather permitting, he arrives first thing in the morning at least five days a week -- to practice on the range and to get his favorite french-fries in the Hole In One Café in the clubhouse. These are the highlights of his day. Presently, he’s smashing a personal 365 Day Challenge – to get out and practice every day for a year!
Many eyes are on him as he practices, because one tee shot after the next is hit with a crisp snap, the ball goes high in the air and directly to his target. Other patrons watch in awe. Occasionally, someone will walk up to him, shake his hand to say ‘hello,’ and whether they admit it or not, they are hoping to catch some of his mojo. Paul rarely mish*ts a shot. He doesn’t flaunt his abilities; he just does what he knows.
“I love to crack a drive high and far. So far, I can’t see it anymore!” His positivity is contagious.
Paul has had three holes in one! He remembers his first fondly as he was playing with his friend “Big Eddie.” Playing in intermittent rain, he and Eddie had to push a cart out of a muddy area and proceeded to a 200-yard par three hole where he smashed a wood from the tee, the ball landed alongside the green, circled around and fell in the cup! The perfect shot on a less than perfect day.
Paul has been a builder his whole life. He builds and modifies homes, builds decks, redesigns and redecorates homes, and he’s not done yet. When asked when he retired, he was quick to respond, “I’ve NEVER retired!” He’s still working on little projects around the house.
He loves coming out to Henderson. He prefers the grass practice tee, the openness of the practice range, the surrounding nature, the people within our golfing community, the support of the staff, and, of course, the French fries at the Hole in One Café.
“He’s part of what we are all about at Henderson," golf pro Dan Gawronski says fondly. "It doesn’t matter if you’re a new golfer or a veteran; a good golfer or still learning; a young golfer or seasoned; you are welcomed to enjoy the game, the environment, and the community at Henderson. Paul inspires us all and we are proud that he prefers Henderson over the other options at his disposal. We look forward to seeing him every day.”
A pleasant chat over a plate of French fries and a Coke, I asked Paul if he thought of anything else he would like to share before he went about his day. His response, “I don’t think, I DO!” Perfect. Inspiration for us all.
89 years old and golfs every single day . . . coincidence? We think not. 😉
