Landings Sailors Victorious in the 2026 Low Country Hook Race
By Alan Perper, edited by James Nicol

This year’s Hook Race from Hilton Head to Skidaway was held on Saturday. In a competitive field of multiple classes of boats, The Landings Sailing Club’s J/24 Bonnie Blue was first overall, although not without some drama.

Two club J/24’s, Bonnie Blue and Gone with the Wind, left Friday morning April 24th from Landings Harbor Marina to work their way to Palmetto Bay Marina on Hilton Head for the start of the 2026 Hook Race the following day. The crews had a glorious sail under sunny skies in 10-12mph winds from the SW, allowing them to reach down the Wilmington River and then set the chute for the run up the coast. The trip to Palmetto Bay Marina took about 4 hours.

Race day dawned to reveal beautiful weather and an ideal breeze at 8-10 mph. Bonnie Blue was slightly too aggressive at the start and didn’t account for the strong tide which pushed them over the start line early. But they managed to work their way back up to the start and then rejoin the fleet, only to see the wind go completely flat. By the time the wind SSW of 10-15 mph filled back in, Bonnie Blue was leading the entire fleet - quite an accomplishment!

The SSW wind meant the boats had to sail close hauled in lumpy seas for the 10 miles across Tybee Roads to the turning mark in the ocean outside Wassaw Sound. It was only then that Bonnie Blue was overhauled by the bigger and faster J/100 named Nomad, a J/109 named Yahoo, and a fast J/70 crewed by a college team.

However, Bonnie Blue held its own to the finish. Although Yahoo and the J/70 finished well ahead, and Nomad and a 2nd J/70 crossed seconds before Bonnie Blue, on corrected time comparing all 12 boats competing, Bonnie Blue was FIRST overall, with a 10 minute lead over the 2nd place boat!

Congratulations to Bonnie Blue’s skipper and crew: David Bailey, Mary Kovats, Alan Perper and Steve Terrio and to the skipper and crew of Gone with the Wind: Doug Powelson, Bruce Chong, David Bacon, Jay Kells and Scott Loehr.

New Neighbors Outing # 3 a great success

Despite a good number of LSC sailors being away for the Hook Race, we had a great turnout to help support our 2nd New Neighbors outing, with 12 guests on six boats. The S wind at about 10 under a mostly sunny sky allowed our guests to enjoy some proper sailing (not too flat, not burying a rail - just right!) up and down the river with a slack tide. There were lots of smiles all around.

The marina staff were great - getting the boats into the water quickly despite having few available racks, and then helping avoid delays in getting us to the dockside bar to swap stories. There was food and refreshments to enjoy, and no bugs!

Thanks to Steve Terrio, and of course our New Neighbors partners for organizing it, our skippers and crew, our bartenders Mike and Jeff and all those who provided food to share - and making it another successful outing!

We have two more of these outings in May - the 8th and the 22nd.

Close Encounter with the Large Kind! As we sailed to Hilton Head for the Low Country Hook Race, the Tybee Roads shipping channel was crowded. Course corrections were needed to dodge the freighters and zip across the shipping lanes. 28 miles in 4-1/2 hrs. Tomorrow will be a different story.

Patience Pays Off
by David Bailey

A light sea breeze was building last Saturday morning as 4 optimistic skippers and their crews paddled/drifted/sailed out of Landings Harbor Marina. As the races began against a raging ebb tide and a light breeze, boats struggled for position at the start.

However, by the start of the 4th race, the breeze was a steady 12 knots and teams strategically jockeyed for position at the gun. After 4 tight races, the standings were all knotted up. Congratulations to Scholar, crewed by Jeff Chandor and Mary Kovats, taking first overall for the day. Other finishers included Uno Mas (David Jefferiss and Sandi Parshall), Harvest Moon (Mike Rouzee and Alan Perper) and Sinbad (Doug Powelson and Pat Howard).

(Editors Note: Race Committee was provided by David Bailey who ran 4 races on his own!)

All gathered on the porch afterwards for a beverage and fellowship. What a great day (once again!) to be on the water!

Some really close racing on Saturday. With a 1 person Race Committee on Starfish we had 4 very competitive races with 4 boats coming out. Many thanks to David Bailey for setting up a perfect short W/L course.

A Glorious Day on the Water
Sunday , April 13th
by Sandi Parshall

Spring is here and the weather is perfect for sailing, with last Sunday being a great example. The sun was shining, the sky was a bright blue and the wind was 10-15 from the south. The biggest challenges for the sailors were the incoming tide, and a short start line tucked into the Skidaway shore. The race committee set a windward leeward course to Red 22 and return to the finish. Six boats were on the water to race. With some congestion in the marina. Tinker Bell just made it to the start line in time.

It was a close start for all in the first race. Leading the way, Mike Rouzee on Harvest Moon did his patented move of hugging the shoreline (we should give it a name – like “doing a Rouzee”), this time just a little bit too well, as he and Mary ran aground. On a rising tide, they were off in no time, although this put them in last place. But all the other boats also short tacked along the Skidaway side, leading to a number of close encounters. Rounding the weather mark was a challenge for all the boats against the ripping tide - they had to give the mark a lot of room, and then some. On the downwind leg all the boats got their spinnakers up successfully, some jibing to get across the river and the current. The top three finishers were Sinbad (David Bailey), Susan B ( Doug Powelson ) and Tinker Bell (James Nicol).

The second race was another close start with Harvest Moon leading all the way to the finish. Uno Mas (Alan Perper) was second and Tinker Bell third.

On the start of the third race, it was tight with 3 boats vying for the pin end. One boat fouled another - both ended up over early and had to re-start.
Harvest Moon finished first. Uno Mas was second, Sinbad was third.

The cumulative results were Harvest Moon first (well done Mike and Mary), Sinbad second, Uno Mas third , Susan B fourth, Tinker Bell fifth and Scholar sixth.

Thanks to the race committee of Brian Burtnik, Sandi Parshall and Paul Evans.

This evening we had a heart-warming send-off to a Landings Sailing Club volunteer extraordinaire, Mary Kovats. We sure are going to miss your smiling face and can-do attitude.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to making this such a nice event - especially Sara and Peter Gebhard for opening up their beautiful home for us!

Easter Weekend Racing

A strong fleet of seven boats were scheduled to race on Saturday, with a wonderful weather forecast in store. However, the marina was severely overworked with staff shortages, racks displaced by building materials, and a massive demand for other boat launches of all kinds due to the holiday weekend. Disappointingly, one of our Rhodes 19s rigged but couldn’t get a launch slot and never made it to the start line.

While boats were struggling to get out on the river, the RC ran a warm-up race. Winds were from the SSE at 8-15 with a strong ebb current, making for some 2-3 foot waves. Scholar led from start to finish, edging out Sinbad and Yankee. Once that race was finished, the start sequence began for the full fleet of racers. With 6 boats now out on the course, the second race featured two windward and two downwind legs, providing drama with Spinnaker takedowns and resets. The race took just under 50 minutes, allowing all boats to beat the low tide back into the marina.

It was close too. The sixth boat Uno Mas with Sandi Parshal, Jeff Chandor, and Sara Gebhard finished only 4 minutes behind the winner, Scholar, with David Bailey and Scott Loehr aboard. Sinbad with Doug Powelson and Mary Kovats finished second.
Harvest Moon finished 3rd, sailed by Paul Evans and Chris O'Toole. (Finishing in 4th place was Yankee sailed by James and David Nicol, who actually didn’t start due to a mechanical issue, and only sailed the second leg once they had sorted out it out). Tinker Bell finished 5th with Alan Pepper and Brian Burdik aboard.

Sophus Sanche gets the sportsmanship award for patiently enduring the chaos in the marina. Race Committee. Steve Terio, Mike Rouzee and David Jefferiss
