Landings Sailors Victorious in the 2026 Low Country Hook Race
By Alan Perper, edited by James Nicol
This year’s Hook Race from Hilton Head to Skidaway was held on Saturday. In a competitive field of multiple classes of boats, The Landings Sailing Club’s J/24 Bonnie Blue was first overall, although not without some drama.
Two club J/24’s, Bonnie Blue and Gone with the Wind, left Friday morning April 24th from Landings Harbor Marina to work their way to Palmetto Bay Marina on Hilton Head for the start of the 2026 Hook Race the following day. The crews had a glorious sail under sunny skies in 10-12mph winds from the SW, allowing them to reach down the Wilmington River and then set the chute for the run up the coast. The trip to Palmetto Bay Marina took about 4 hours.
Race day dawned to reveal beautiful weather and an ideal breeze at 8-10 mph. Bonnie Blue was slightly too aggressive at the start and didn’t account for the strong tide which pushed them over the start line early. But they managed to work their way back up to the start and then rejoin the fleet, only to see the wind go completely flat. By the time the wind SSW of 10-15 mph filled back in, Bonnie Blue was leading the entire fleet - quite an accomplishment!
The SSW wind meant the boats had to sail close hauled in lumpy seas for the 10 miles across Tybee Roads to the turning mark in the ocean outside Wassaw Sound. It was only then that Bonnie Blue was overhauled by the bigger and faster J/100 named Nomad, a J/109 named Yahoo, and a fast J/70 crewed by a college team.
However, Bonnie Blue held its own to the finish. Although Yahoo and the J/70 finished well ahead, and Nomad and a 2nd J/70 crossed seconds before Bonnie Blue, on corrected time comparing all 12 boats competing, Bonnie Blue was FIRST overall, with a 10 minute lead over the 2nd place boat!
Congratulations to Bonnie Blue’s skipper and crew: David Bailey, Mary Kovats, Alan Perper and Steve Terrio and to the skipper and crew of Gone with the Wind: Doug Powelson, Bruce Chong, David Bacon, Jay Kells and Scott Loehr.
