🐴 What is Ranch Enabled Learning?

I have been posting looking for more volunteers so I thought I would share a bit more about what I do here at The Barn at Sheltering Tree.

Ranch Enabled Learning (REL) uses the natural bond between children and horses to provide learning through hands on and sensory activities.

As Barn Manager I get to work with some incredible children and our 7 special horses!

We use the barn, horses and activities on the ranch to help build skills in children including communication, confidence, coordination, problem solving and responsibility.

Sometimes this is done through riding but can also include grooming, learning about equine anatomy, completing worksheets or just building relationships with our boys!

Every child learns in different ways which I LOVE about REL. We get to know the children where they are and help them learn in ways that mean something to them.

Our Volunteers!

Whether you are helping them ride, walking alongside or just providing extra help you are enabling these opportunities.

It takes a very special team to make this happen and I am so grateful for those that have become part of our barn family! ❤️

If you have ever been curious to know what we do or want to be involved I would love to show you our little part of the world!

❤️ HELP WANTED: HORSE LOVERS WITH AN HOUR TO SPARE! 🐴

I have some of the absolute BEST volunteers around, and I want to take a minute to brag on them! From the folks who show up to help with events to the wonderful volunteers who give lessons, I appreciate every single one of them. They are a huge part of what makes our barn special.

But today, I want to shine a little extra light on a special group of volunteers who don't always get the credit they deserve. My side-walkers! ❤️

These are the folks who give me a few hours during the school week to help our special kids enjoy some time in the saddle. Some walk alongside the horse, while others lead the horse as I stay right beside my student. It takes a team to make sure each child gets to experience the joy of riding as safely as possible.

And let me tell you, that time in the saddle means SO MUCH to these kids! It's about more than riding a horse. It's about smiles, confidence, new experiences, and moments that are hard to put into words.

So, here's my plea. If you have an hour to spare during school hours and a little love for horses and children, we could use YOU!

You don't have to be a riding instructor or an expert horseperson. You just need a willingness to help and a heart for these amazing kids. I'll show you what to do!

Come spend a little time walking around the round pen, enjoy some horse love, and help make a child's day a little brighter.

I can pretty much guarantee you'll leave with a smile of your own after seeing the precious smiles on the faces of some very special children. And who knows? You might just find that your hour at the barn becomes the best part of your week! 🐴❤️

Interested in becoming one of my side-walkers? Send me a message! I'd love to talk with you.

I thought I’d share a video from Candice so y’all can see a little more about what she does! 😊🐴

Candice is a MagnaWave practitioner who will be coming out to the ranch on November 15th to make her services available to the community!

Space is limited that day, so if you’re interested in scheduling a session for your horse, please reach out to the barn or Candice directly to reserve your spot.

We’re happy to help bring opportunities like this to our local horse community! ❤️

Do you like word finds? Word building? Try it our way!
I love turning the whole ranch into an interactive classroom. Here is how it works: I hide letters all across the property, and my students track them down. But there’s a catch—the letters can only be placed on the windshield if they can successfully make a word!
As the trail continues and more letters are gathered, the puzzle grows. By the end of the trail, every single collected letter comes together to spell out one final mystery word in the correct sequence!
It’s active, hands-on, and combines outdoor adventure with critical thinking skills. I love sharing a peek into how we make learning an adventure here on the ranch! 🌿🐴📚

🐴 Well, today we're going to talk about something a little different… PONIES! 🐴

Most of the time, I write about horses, but did you know a pony isn't just a baby horse or a short horse? There's actually a difference, and there's some pretty interesting history behind these little equine partners!

And who better to dedicate this post to than Freckles, the one and only pony at the ranch! ❤️ At 33 years old, he's still helping me teach a whole bunch of kids. Now that's what I call still having a job to do!

So let's learn a little something about ponies!

🐴 First, what's the difference between a horse and a pony?

Horses and ponies belong to the same species, Equus caballus. One of the main differences is their size.

In the United States, ponies are generally considered to be equines measuring under 14.2 hands at the withers when mature. For those who aren't familiar with horse measurements, that's 58 inches at the shoulder. And just so you know, one hand equals 4 inches!

Of course, there are exceptions depending on the breed and the classification being used. Some breeds are called horses even when they're pony-sized, so there's more to it than just pulling out a measuring tape!

🐴 Ponies have a pretty interesting history!

Over the years, ponies have helped people in all kinds of ways. Depending on the breed and where they came from, they were used for riding, pulling carts, carrying loads, and working on farms.

Many traditional pony breeds developed in places where they needed to be hardy and make good use of the food available. Their strength and size made them valuable working partners.

And NO, ponies aren't just for little kids! They can be riding and driving partners and take part in all kinds of equestrian activities.

🐴 Here's another thing people sometimes get confused about.

A baby horse is called a foal. As it grows up, it becomes a mature horse or pony, depending on its type and breed. A pony doesn't automatically become a horse just because it gets older!

❤️ Now, let's talk about our Freckles!

Freckles is our one and only pony at the ranch, and he's helping me teach children about horse parts, grooming, handling, and learning how to care for these amazing animals.

Sometimes learning looks a little different around here. A child can look at a picture on a worksheet, then walk over to Freckles and see that same body part in real life. That's hands-on learning, and you just can't beat it!

I believe our older equine partners still have so much to give. They can continue to be part of a child's learning experience as long as we're mindful of their individual needs and make their comfort a priority.

Freckles may not be the biggest guy in the barn, but he's certainly making his mark on the kids who get to learn from him. ❤️

So today, we're tipping our hats to the little pony with a big job!

And knowing Freckles, he's probably just happy to be getting some extra attention. 😂🐴

I got a text from Saey last night that we had a barn owl show up at the barn! 🦉😂

Well, Sheriff Bay wasn't about to let this case go unsolved! He called Deputy Ray in, and it looks like the situation is under control. 🤣🚨

Turns out, our little owl was a pretty cute visitor, and once Sheriff Bay got that sheriff's hat on him, I think we may have found ourselves a new member of the law enforcement team at Sheltering Tree Ranch! 🤠🦉❤️

I hope all you kiddos had a wonderful time at the barn! I sure hated missing out, and I would LOVE to see all your pictures from your visit.

📸 Drop your pictures in the comments below so I can see what I missed!

Around here, we don't just make memories with horses. Sometimes we deputize baby owls, too! 😂🐴🦉
