Your changeup doesn’t need more movement. It needs more trust. Doesn’t matter what level you play at, pitchers struggle to trust their changeup. They aim it, push it, or try to force movement instead of throwing it like a fastball.
-
The goal? Make it look like a fastball until it’s too late.
-
Same intent. Same arm speed. Same delivery. Let the grip do the work. Stop trying to make the changeup move. Throw it like you mean it.

Did someone say changeup? Tyus did.
-
I could’ve let him throw 10 changeups in a row, giving him a new cue every pitch and hoping something clicked. Instead, we mixed pitches, let him fail, added a guardrail, and saw what happened.
-
No matter what Tyus had tried in the past, his changeup either wouldn’t reach the plate, came in too hot, or didn’t move at all. A big piece of the puzzle? Inconsistent release points stemming from a lack of confidence in the pitch.
-
What pitch did he trust? His fastball. So we alternated fastballs and changeups, letting him use a pitch he trusted to create the feel for one he didn’t.
-
And boom.
-
He didn’t need to do anything extra. He just needed to let the grip do its job. It’s almost like there’s a theme here: less forcing, more adapting. Weird how that works.
