Unicoi Outfitters Fishing Report 8/28/26

It’s still hot and dry, and our streams are low and clear, for the most part. River bassin’ has been good, while headwater trouting has been poor. Tailwater trout and fresh stockers are still providing good action for trouting fans, both bait and fly. We can sure use some overnite low air temperatures around 60 degrees to rekindle the trout bite up here. In the meantime, we’ve been heading real high in the mountains to find a few fish. Summary: it’s still hot up here, so wild trout are out and stocker opportunities are waning at season-end. The good news is that the rains have subsided, so river bassin’ is a best bet. Mountain lake bassin woke up, too, while ponds should still fish well in low light of dawn and dusk.

Well, that heat dome that’s been cooking our far-western neighbors has finally caught up with us. I guess it’s just our turn.

It’s downright uncomfortable out there after lunch! In terms of your own angling opportunities, most mountain trout are out, but stockers, Tailwater trout, and maybe some river bass are in! Just dial into your favorite river gauges and fly shops to know which way to head.
