A Bicycle Odyssey

A Bicycle Odyssey Bicycle shop opened in 1975 in Sausalito CA by Tony Tom At A Bicycle Odyssey, we love people who are fanatics about cycling, bicycles, and gear.

Permanently closed.

We have been a full service bike shop actively supporting the sport of cycling since 1975. We are now closed as of March 2022 when we held our final sale over 5 days because the founder Tony Tom has passed. We are committed to keeping the social media presence alive with history in tribute at this time.

This happened yesterday, and quite a turn out. We had close to 70 riders on the tribute ride put on by Marin Cyclists and then as far as we can tell, over 200 people attended the Celebration of Life for Tony Tom somewhere within the four hour period. Tony, we felt you there in spirit. And thanks to the many of you from all over the world who have sent in your condolences by way of email and social media.

June 8, 2013 ~ A Saturday night at A Bicycle Odyssey. On this occasion, after the shop was empty… Tony stayed into the night to implement some upgrades to a bike. So mesmerizing to watch his skillful hands like a surgeon, knowing just what to do. We barely exchanged words for several hours. This footage was filmed around midnight and the music matches how it felt at that time, the wonder and simplicity.

April 2015 ~ this video created as a test of some new camera equipment (so apologies that it’s bouncy at times). A representation of an unbelievable day getting to ride my bike with Tony and some other luminous souls up the side of Mount Tam. One of those “pinch me” moments in life. 🚴🌟🚲🥰🌟🌟

Greetings ABO Community,

Another vintage post to get ready for tomorrow -- these photos were unearthed of Tony Tom during his racing days in the late 1970s. Tony remained active almost daily on his bicycle throughout his life and was always up for a ride when he wasn't working -- frequently commuting over the Golden Gate Bridge on the bicycle to visit his family in SF.

Over his years with the shop, Tony was able to work closely with many world renowned bicycle racers because he was one of the best when it came to bicycle fitting. Time would stand still while he meticulously gathered information on the fit bike, made adjustments with clients to insure their maximum comfort with strength and flexibility in relation to their bike. This same excellent service was offered to "regular" cyclists as well and countless customers have benefitted so they can "ride like the wind."

Reminder that this coming FRIDAY at 11am -- our doors are open for the final 3 days of sale. We sure hope you can stop by -- we have tools, fixtures, shoes, helmets, wheel sets, hubs, in addition to the clothing, bicycles, frames -- so much inventory and it's changing hourly/daily as we continue to bring things in from storage believe it or not.

If your bike is consigned or stored at the shop right now, we fear it will be harder to locate after this sale if you don't pick it up. Please do so if you haven't already -- detailed photos or description is very important.

Good morning ABO community,

We'd like to start by saying the past two days have been so memorable, poignant, heartfelt and very busy as you know. We thank all of you who have taken the time to stop in and lighten our load. If you haven't come by, please do.

Please note that we're closing tomorrow Monday March 21 for organizational purposes instead of being open like we originally said. We will still be open for the final three days though and we have more inventory circling in every day of this sale. Starting Friday we're selling tools and other fixtures/equipment in the shop as well. Grab your one-of-a-kind piece of Odyssey history while you can. Every dollar helps us so if you can waive your discount, let us know as we'd be most appreciative.

Online sales? It might happen after the public sale so keep your eyes on our website and/or social media.

Reminder if you have a bicycle at the shop for consignment or repair, it is imperative you come get it and help us out with photos and detailed description please. We have to be out of this space by end of this month.

The doors are about to open for Day 2 of the seven day "End of an Odyssey" sale. We'd like to keep the spirit of the sale going by sharing another memory from one of Tony's oldest friends -- Dan Zelinsky. Dan met Tony back in the early days when the Odyssey was still located at 2001 Caledonia. Dan bought his first fixie from Tony there and still has it along with 3 other bikes all from Tony.

In the late 1970's Dan woke up on Thanksgiving to an incredible deluge of rain and wind. One of the worst storms in the Bay Area that he could recall. He suited up and rode from SF across the GG Bridge over to the Parking lot of Mt. Tam High. Tony had been organizing Thanksgiving Day rides but on this day -- nobody showed up. "I wonder why?" thought Dan. So he pedaled over to Sausalito and stood outside of Tony's apartment and hollered up to him. Tony looked out the window at a soaked Dan Z on his bicycle and just laughed.

Of course Tony rallied despite the weather. The two cyclists headed toward Tam and tried to get to the top. They made it as far as Mt. Home Inn before taking inventory of their frozen soaked state and near hypothermia and decided to turnaround. Tea and warming up back in Sausalito was the way to go at that point but heh -- they got out in it!

If you don't know of Dan, he's the long time owner of the incredible Musee Mecanique in San Francisco and has been close with Tony and his family from the beginning. By the way, for those of you excited about the vintage bike race game, it is called "the Marathon Cycle Race" for Two Players and can very much be enjoyed at the Musee Mecanique mentioned above. it is not at the Odyssey though it once was there a long time ago.
