The Hornets of North Reading invited me back for another team consult. Our objectives this year were to build trust individually and collectively, connect, and simulate sense of urgency on field to yield better decision making under pressure. My favorite part of the day was seeing their faces when they read what their teammates admire about them. Way to bring the energy, ladies! Finish strong this season. Thanks for inviting me and sharing your team with me.

Last spring I got to spend time with the Ballston Spa Scotties Girls Lacrosse program to kick off their season. With a new coaching staff establishing a clean slate and new cultural standards to be able to come together as a team when things got hard. We did a pre-season workshop and a light mid-season check in. They have already booked for 2026 and I cannot wait to see where this group wants to go.

“We didn’t just get better. We got stronger—mentally, physically, and as a team.” 🏆

This past spring, North Reading High School Girls Lacrosse brought in Jamie from The Empowered Athlete Mission for a team workshop at a critical point in their season.

The result?
✅ Purpose-driven, high-energy sessions tailored to their needs
✅ Lessons that stuck far beyond the workshop
✅ A Sweet 16 playoff run fueled by mental focus, grit, and team unity

Coach’s words say it best:
“Jamie is an incredible mentor, leader, and educator. She helps athletes tap into something they may have had within them all along.”

I first met Hannah during soccer season when I was the JV coach at her HS. Right away it seemed like I understood her and she willingly trusted me. Although we had our moments, as we often do with teenagers, believing in Hannah was easy. Hannah was a surprise Varsity Lacrosse starter as a sophomore and immediatly made an impact on the attack as a feeder. I love pure feeders, because they empower others to shine and they can be some of the best teammates. For me, it was watching the confidence in herself grow, embracing who she is, and leaning into the strengths she brings to the table that were the most rewarding to see. I remember the trip she learned she could play at the next level for lacrosse - something she had not considered until late in the process. Hannah found the best fit school for her academically, socially and athletically… and she soared!!! Her junior year she was a Top 50 attacker in Assists for NCAA DIII and led the Little East Conference with Assists and Assists per Game. I had the privilege of coaching against her in college and it was so fun to see her thrive; except that she always seemed to have the best games when I was on the field. After one game I jokingly told her to, “Get out of my stadium!! I am tired of hearing your name called over the loud-speaker.” I look forward to going to see her as a Coach with her former HS team. I am so grateful that Hannah chose to trust me all those years ago and to continue to share who she is with me.

The best thing for your athletes to do is to relax, move their bodies well, and have fun at all levels. Any version of Tag is one of the best options for youth. Not only do players loosen up, they wake up as they begin to smile, laugh, capture and evade. The games ultimate frisbee, gladiator ball, touch rugby, handball are all games I regularly play to help players see, create, and take away space together. It all has a purpose that reinforces the main objectives. The magic is in spending 6-10 minutes just having fun and not playing your sport. Regularly NHL hockey players can be found playing soccer or in soccer juggling circles in the arena before games. Mentally relax, loosen up a bit, enjoy the company of teammates, and laugh.
During an unexpected stoppage of play the body can sometimes slow into a lathargic state rather than a readily relaxed state. Examples include taking field earlier than the other team or after an injury time out, etc. Sometimes, I will ask my team do 3 pushups on the field shortly before play restarts. This raises their heartbeat and primes them physiologically to restart. They know this, because we talk about why we do it.
The magic pill before games is to get your team to mentally, emotionally, and physically loosen up and be where their feet are.

I have been on a lot of sidelines as a fan, as a college recruiter, and as an official. I can tell you more often than not the things on that sideline are not in accordance with what the kids are playing for and striving toward together. It is so easy to default to see the negative. It’s harder to look for the good. Jesse Owens said it best, “Find the good. It’s all around you. Find it, showcase it, and you’ll start believing in it.” There is a difference between losing and having a losing culture. Losing cultures have pissahs on their lawn. Find the good in the hard, find the good in the adversity, find the good in the opportunity to lose. Caylee Waters, professional women’s lacrosse goalie and USA Wold Champion said at her retirement speech , “I would rather have the opportunity to lose than to not play.” What are you playing for? Can you keep playing for that when you don’t have the role you want? Can you keep playing for that when your team is losing by a lot or in an important game? It’s not about the end result, it’s about who we are and who we become from chasing after it. Like Pat Summitt said, “winning is fun…sure, but winning is not the point. Wanting to win is the point. Never giving up is the point. Never letting up is the point. Never being satisfied with what you’ve done is the point.” Remember what we are playing for in High School and youth sports. Water your lawns. You may be surprised by how green it gets right where you already are.

In life there are going to be many storms. When we play sports we are choosing our storm, choosing our struggle. We also know there is a time limit on that struggle: practices, games, and seasons all have ending points. How we choose to endure and embrace these opportunities on the athletic field is equal to our mental toughness and flexibility off of the field. How we handle the small and medium-sized hard in our life prepares us for the big things. As coaches and parents we do a disservice to those in our charge by allowing them to make excuses for and removing the small and medium sized hard in their life. As a team, cows will run away from any type of adversity. They will avoid or excuse anything internal or external that feels somewhat uncomfortable. The Buffalo among you, well they’re going to be the ones who put everything out in the open to deal with. They will face internal and external issues the same way - head on. Be a Buffalo and celebrate the Buffalo amongst you.

There are many kinds of ropes that hold you back in life and in performance.
“Nah, I can’t that early, I’m not a morning person. I’d go at like 9 or something.”
“I always come in second place.”
“I’m not good enough.”
“I prefer to workout by myself.”
“I don’t like to fail in front of others.”
“I’m too small, too big, too much…”
“I don’t deserve the good things that happen to me.”
“I don’t trust people. I’m more of a lone wolf.”

Ropes tend to start with…
“I can’t …”
“I won’t …”
“I don’t…”
“I am too…”
“I’m used to…”
“They did… They said…”

And end with a limiting belief, choosing words that isolating one’s self or rationalizing behavior that perpetuates the belief.

Ropes that begin with I Am are much stronger ropes. These are ropes you have tied to your identity. They will limit what you see as opportunities and your capabilities. If you do not believe you can, then you most definitely won’t.

🦀 You decide your mindset. Crabs are a mindset. You choose the crabs that are within you and you influence the ones outside of you. I encourage you to assert yourself over the crabs that bring you down. It is YOU who believes the crabs or who continues to give them opportunity to grab ahold of you.
Start by identifying them. Who, What, Where and When do your crabs show up? Looking at Why those crabs are there is okay, but do not get stuck in the Why. Be more concerned with What do you want to do about them.
What will you do about your crabs? 🦀
