Tai Ji is not simply a means of promoting health rather, it is also a means of developing combat and self-defense skills, improving concentration and overall well-being. What form of Tai Ji does Master Yan focus on? The form of Tai Ji Master Yan focuses on is one of self-defense and combat. This allows the practitioner to protect oneself from an opponent taller, heavier and stronger. How is it possible to use Tai Ji for self-defense against a superior opponent? Beyond the speed and agility one develops is the principle behind Tai Ji of the power of the twisting motion, connecting the arms and hands to the feet, using the full body's power to protect oneself. As one practices Tai Ji, they begin to feel the life force that moves through their body, not simply comparing muscle size with the opponent, but using the ligaments and tendons of the body to create what is described as, "Iron covered by cotton." Twisting the body, the arms the wrists draws power from deep within connecting the entire body's strength to defend against a threat. Isn't this a slow, dance-like martial art? Westernized Tai Chi can many times focus on breathing and slow, soft movements to improve overall health and relaxation. What is the commitment in attending the Tai Ji training?
