Sofie Sepulveda left it ALL on the field Thursday night-blood, sweat and tears. In a thrilling comeback, Sepulveda led the Lady Rams from down 0-2 with only 20+ minutes left in the game, to tie it 2-2 with 12 min to play. Unfortunately, her tenacity and goal-scoring ability were not available in the scoreless double overtime, nor the PK shootout. The senior took a headbutt to her head, resulting in a bloody 15-min delay with only 3 min left in regulation. While she was taken to the emergency room in an ambulance to get stitches and checked out, her teammates kept saying, “let’s win this for Sofie.”
Sumner got on the scoreboard just 4 min into the match. However, even after another goal put the guests down 0-2, the raucous Ram crowd kept the spirits high and the hopes alive. Junior goalkeeper Bronwyn Leggett had her best game of the year, making acrobatic stops and commanding the box in the air. In front of her, senior Kate St.Onge and 3 sophomores (Lyla Johnson, Avery Hunt and Emily Whitehurst), stymied a potent Sumner attack, which had outscored their opponents 85-18 this year.
The Lady Rams cut into the lead after Emily Simone was fouled in the box. Sepulveda calmly placed the ball in the bottom corner. With 12 minutes to play, Sophia Oszlanczi was fouled from behind which also resulted in more Sepulveda brilliance from the spot-cool as the other side of the pillow! After the Sepulveda injury, speedy sophomore Harper Kelly, beat the keeper with a toe poke and, and with it almost going over the endline, somehow got enough power, but falling away at the sharpest of angles, the ball mercilessly pinged off the post. This would have been just as Kelly shuffled past the Stingray defense all night long.
After 2 overtimes, the game was decided by PKs. While Sofie’s skillset was not an option, Bronwyn Leggett helped win for her friend by stopping 2/4 shots, took one herself with Oszlanczi, Simone and Mia Alexander, sending the Lady Rams into a frenzy. Sofie is already talking about the next game at Newsome, the Sweet 16, the 1st appearance in the program’s 40-year history. Today, we celebrate and talk about Sofie’s courage and heroics! Way to go Sofie!!!
