Established in 1982, Adirondack Foothills Guide Service is a family-owned and operated outdoor guide service. Sonny and Sheila Young, both New York State Licensed Outdoor Guides, have lived and worked in the Saranac Lake area of the Adirondack Park since 1989. Both have served as President of the New York State Outdoor Guides Association, and have won several awards in service to that organization

. They are founding members and trustees of the Search and Rescue of the Northern Adirondacks team. Sonny and Sheila are Certified Interpretive Guides, credentialled by the National Association for Interpretation, providing leadership and excellence in the advancement of heritage interpretation as a profession. Sonny and Sheila are instructors for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Becoming an Outdoorswoman program, volunteering map and compass instruction since 1994 to a program that has taught wildlands skills to more than 3000 students to date. Both Sonny and Sheila adhere to minimal impact conservation of wild resources and have studied their fields of interest intensively. Learn the basics of map reading, compass use, and putting both together to navigate city streets or the back-country including –
1. Preparedness: How to plan your trip – How to select the correct map and compass – What to carry with you.
2. How to understand and use your map and compass – Point to point – Navigating to unseen points – Map-to-compass and compass-to-map transference.
How to register

2. Pre-registration is required. The class, 10 a.m. to about 3 p.m., is $85/person and includes instruction, materials and lunch.
