I’ve been an athlete my entire life - playing soccer in college and watching many of my friends and teammates go on to play professionally. I remember having a younger assistant coach who played and always jumped into practice with us, she was an incredible player who clearly could have gone pro & we always wondered why she didn’t. When we asked, her answer stuck with me:
- It wasn’t worth it. It’s not sustainable. Pay was s**t.
Then and now: Women in sports weren’t just fighting for championships and successful seasons - they were fighting to be valued, to have careers that could sustain them, to play without sacrifice beyond the game itself.
I always knew I wanted to stay connected to sports after college, but I never imagined it would be in the way I do now. The growth of women’s sports, the brands investing in them, and the women who have pushed forward, long before the world paid attention, are exactly the forces I want to stand beside. To capture their strength. To amplify their voices. To tell the stories that deserve to be told because the power of sport impacts everyone.
In January, while shooting with Lexie & Kate for Unrivaled (a league that exists because of this very progress) we talked about what this moment means to them. Kate said something that stuck with me:
“We stand on the shoulders of giants that came before us.”
The fight for recognition, for opportunity, for equity - it didn’t start today, but today, we are finally starting to see the impact of those who continued to fight for something they believe in. The gratitude these athletes feel to play the sport they love and to be supported in the way they are, is a testament to change. A little reminder that no step forward is too small, that small efforts do add up.
This is the work I want to be part of. The stories I want to tell. Because the momentum is here. So excited to watch this WBNA season and continue to watch and support the growth of women’s sports and the impact that comes from it.
