On this day in history in 1924, the Douglas World Cruisers began the First Around The World Flight from Santa Monica's Clover Field! At dawn of March 17, with their 420-horsepower Liberty engines tuned to perfection, the Seattle, Chicago, Boston and the New Orleans posed wingtip-to-wingtip and awaited the moment that would catapult their image to the eyes and hearts of people all over the world. Spectators converged on Clover Field in horse-drawn carriages, autos and on foot. They watched as the Douglas World Cruisers roared down the field, became airborne, maneuvered into a loose diamond formation, and headed out on a course to Seattle, official departure point.
