Competition is a great way for kids to learn to become both gracious winners and a gracious loser. It is easy to celebrate and enjoy sports when victorious. It is harder, especially for kids, to understand and deal with losing. However, it is an important aspect of life. Sports provide a great way to channel energy and provide motivation to try again!

How did you learn to accept a loss?

SoCal living allows for beach days even in November! It could and should be so much fun to go to the beach as a family. Yet, it can seem daunting and some important ideas can slip your mind. Here are 4 tips to help ensure the best family day at one of our local beautiful beaches!

Check the local beach environment, specifically tide schedules. Tides can provide huge, strong waves or tide pools with smelly beaches. Tide information can be found at: https://www.tide-forecast.com/locations/California-1/tides/latest. Keep in mind the strength of each of your swimmers and what activities they are looking forward to at the beach when deciding the best time to go.
Being out in the sun and playing in the cool water, it is easy to forget about drinking water. Make sure everyone drinks water consistently throughout the day. Additionally, notice if anyone in your party displays signs of dehydration, including thirst, dry mouth, cool skin, and headaches.
It can be such a buzzkill to stop playing and having fun to reapply sunscreen. Rashguards and sun shirts are great investments because they cover and protect your skin which allows for just a small area to need the reapplication of sunblock.
A beach umbrella or a beach tent allows for a place to escape the sun. It also creates a place for little ones to rest and potentially nap. The shade will be cooler than sitting in direct sunlight, giving an option to enjoy the beach but beat the heat!

Did you know that the world record for the longest amount of time holding one’s breath was set this year? It broke a long-standing record by over 34 seconds and was set by 56-year Croatian free diver Budimir Ε obat in March of 2021. Taking on freediving when he was 48, Ε obat proves that age is nothing but a number and that no one is too old to accomplish their goals. He was able to hold his breath underwater for 24 minutes and 37 seconds. That is almost the length of a swim lesson!

Testimonial Tuesday: We strive to create a positive, educational experience for all our swimmers. We do not have a one size fits all philosophy and want to establish a positive relationship with the water for everyone. We want our swimmers to look forward to their lessons as much as we do!

Don’t let lack of pool access stop you from making progress in your swim lessons! Here are 4 skills you can practice at home, no pool necessary!

1. Face submersion- practice in the bath, the shower, or a bowl of water. This will allow you to feel more comfortable once you are able to get into a larger body of water and have your face in the water.

2. Bubbles- similar to where you can practice face submersion, you can also practice bubbles using a straw in a cup or bowl of liquid.

3. Forward and Backward Arm Circles- this skill can be tricky in the water when you are first learning strokes. Create some muscle memory by practicing arm circles while on dry land. Forward arm circles mimic the front crawl arm strokes, back arm circles help with backstroke arm motion.

4. Flutter kicks- great for practicing your backstroke kick. Lie on your back and raise your legs off the ground. Point your toes and alternate performing little kicks with your legs.

Swimming goes back thousands of years. πŸŠβ€β™€οΈ

We were surprised to learn the oldest stroke is, in fact, the breaststroke.

Breaststroke is believed to be the oldest of strokes, with its history going back to the Stone Age!

It is used in lifesaving and recreational swimming as well as in competitive swimming. It was first introduced to the Olympics in 1904. The stroke is especially effective in rough water.
