It began with three seconds. Coach Kosgei looked at Ehren Kee Natay - celebrated multimedia artist of the Navajo Nation, whose name Natay means Leader - and said: "Draw me a warrior." Ehren didn't think. He remembered. Pure ancestral instinct channeled 3,000 years of Kalenjin warrior energy onto the page - and that raw, unaltered silhouette became the emblem of RWAIK (rwa-eek).
The warrior carries a people. The Kalenjin of Kenya have kept their land for three millennia - eight age-sets, each advancing every thirteen years, a century turning like a wheel. In the early 1900s their runners carried the mail on foot across the Sosiani River in Eldoret, past the post marked 64. Every marathoner alive descends from that duty.
And the golden rooster? Ask a Kalenjin farmer for one ear of corn - receive two. Ask for three - carry home four. Return more than was asked of you. That vow is on every shirt.
