Zanshin Shotokan Karate & Fitness Traditional Shotokan Karate School The school derives its rich tradition of Shotokan Karate that originates back to Japan in 1939.

Zanshin Shotokan Karate was established by Rocky Whatule; a national, international and world champion with over 23 years of experience. Whatule received his direct training, discipline and certification form Master Bill Viola II at the Allegheny Shotokan Karate Club in North Huntingdon, PA. Allegheny Shotokan is internationally renowned, with teaching experience you can trust! “Home of National, International, and World Champions.” Now Rocky is bringing that teaching and experience to the west coast and to the Santa Clarita Valley.

One of the most misunderstood parts of karate is that the bow, or “Rei,” was never meant to be an empty ritual or simple formality. In traditional martial arts culture, bowing represented humility, gratitude, self-control, and acknowledgment of the people and knowledge that make training possible. A student bowed to the dojo, the instructor, training partners, and even the art itself as a reminder that ego has no place in real learning. This is why many masters believed karate begins and ends with respect—because without discipline, humility, and mutual honor, techniques alone become meaningless. Rei was not about submission; it was about character.
